To tick off my bucket list

Namibia

A true year round destination, Namibia’s game reserves and national parks will have you spotting Black Rhinos and admiring vast dune landscapes with awe.

Weather

  • Temperature: min. 10°C, max. 23°C
  • Long, sunny days and little to no rain forecast.

Season

  • Off-peak.
  • High season is July to October so visit in May and have the parks to yourself and enjoy the dry season, when animals are easiest to spot.

Good for

  • Long journeys are inevitable so under 10s aren’t recommended, instead wait a little so they can truly appreciate Namibia’s unearthly beauty. A good choice for a May half-term break.

What’s there

  • Make the most of your visit by enjoying the national parks.
We recommend the Skeleton Coast and the famous Etosha – considered to be one of the greatest of all African game reserves.
  • Incredible wildlife, including the small population of desert-adapted elephants.

What’s on

  • Self-drive safaris are a popular option in Namibia, you’ll have the freedom of creating your own route and can rest assured that the roads are generally well-surfaced and safe.

The Galapagos

If your children love wildlife, then you can’t get much better than the Galapagos. With varied activities like snorkelling amongst turtles and sea kayaking from your boat, they’ll be transfixed the entire time.

Weather

  • Temperature: min. 22°C, max. 28°C
  • The cool season begins in May.
  • Average water temperature 24.5°C so still suitable for swimming.

Season

  • Peak season is December to June

Good for

  • The Galapagos is a fantasy island for kids with all the wildlife on offer. However, stick to a land based tour rather than cruise to give yourself space and time to explore on your own terms and avoid late nights and early departures.
  • It’s a long flight so teens will fare best or if you’re brave/well practiced then it’s ideal to take preschoolers (especially if they’re under 2 and you don’t have to pay for their seat!)

What’s there

  • Giant tortoises, blue footed boobies, penguins, and extraordinary lizards, are just a few of the rarities that thrive on the islands, and several animal species are completely unique.

What’s on

  • Compared to guided meet-and-greets with the wildlife, activities like surfing, sea-kayaking, beachcombing, and swimming in lagoons, could seem like an anti-climax, but the gorgeous Galapagos protects land and water vigorously too, so even the most ordinary activities here are completely extraordinary.

Flight time from UK: 17 hours to Quito, Ecuador and then 2 hours to Galapagos
