Thanks to LEGOLAND, Billund Denmark will always be the ‘home of the brick’. But it was Peppa Pig who really stole the show for Joanna Penaranda and her three year old twins.
We all know that one of Peppa Pig’s absolute favourite things to do is to jump up and down in muddy puddles. However, when my Peppa-loving three year old twins, Sylvia and Oriol and I were asked to go and experience the brand new Peppa Pig section of LEGOLAND® in Billund, Denmark, over a midsummer weekend, we did not expect to be forced to indulge Peppa’s hobby quite so literally!
Luckily, despite my unremitting regret at not packing wellies for the un-seasonally rainy weather LEGOLAND and its nearby attractions proved to be the ideal break away from London.
LEGOLAND Castle Hotel is the ultimate child size luxury in Billund Denmark
At the LEGOLAND Castle Hotel, our wizard-themed room was decorated with various LEGO owls, peering down on us wisely as we slept. Of course, the twins were thrilled by the magical atmosphere, as well as the music beaming out of LEGO speakers in the hotel corridors.
They were also delighted with the treats on their bed pillows, and loved the LEGO-shaped potato waffles at the dinner buffet. As for me, I appreciated the range of wines on offer which helped to muffle the cacophony of about 100 overexcited children in the restaurant.
In every foyer, corridor and room are large containers of LEGO to delve into, so we could stop for some creative play before meals, after meals, and any time really – getting out of the hotel was a bit of a challenge!

It’s not all about bricks in Billund, incredible Lalandia is at home here too
The Danish weather might have been drizzly, but Lalandia, a vast land of family entertainment, was the perfect indoor antidote. We watched a puppet show in Danish, understanding absolutely nothing but enjoying the spectacle all the same. The twins loved the expansive soft-play area, and their highlight was bouncing on trampolines in harnesses, cackling with joy. I briefly considered strapping myself in for a bounce, but realised I’m not as bold as them!
Take a break from LEGOLAND and go on safari at Givskud Zoo
On our second day we were whisked off to Givskud Zoo, where we boarded a safari bus that took us to meet animals from every continent. My highlight was the lion’s den where we saw several lionesses cradling their cubs. Although Sylvia and Oriol were particularly entranced by the wolves, and their eerie, howling chorus.
Givskud zoo covers a vast area to give animals room for roaming in their enclosures, so expect a lot of walking. There are also wooden trolleys dotted about for pushing too tired little ones. And beware the dinosaur park which is home to some very realistic and large model dinosaurs.
It’s Peppa Pig time and my kids are in awe-struck heaven
The next day we trotted off to LEGOLAND, right opposite the hotel, and naturally our first stop was the new DUPLO® PEPPA PIG Playground, complete with Peppa’s house on top of the hill, mini trampolines in her garden and a colourful play area. The theme music blasts out as kids bounce about and pose for pictures with their idol, and there’s a stage where hourly Peppa shows alternate between Danish and English. Sylvia and Oriol were in heaven.
We also went on every LEGO themed ride we could find, I even unwittingly took the twins on a rollercoaster that Oriol was still talking about reverentially many weeks later. I hadn’t expected smaller kids to be allowed on so many rides and was pleased they didn’t miss out on much because of their age.
Although I admit I did look wistfully at the Danish children wrapped up in waterproofs. But the twins were having so much fun it took them hours to notice their socks and shoes were soaked through.
Most of our days back home are punctuated by claims of hunger, so I felt grateful to both PEPPA PIG Playground and LEGOLAND for distracting us all so completely. Having said that, the park is dotted with food emporiums and we did dart into a couple for some hot chocolate and cake.
Last but not least, Billund Denmark delivers real wows at WOW Park
Our final morning was spent at WOW park, an enormous adventure park that’s like something out of a fairy tale, with an enchanting array of treehouses, step-bridges between trees, giant slides, natural helter-skelter-like swings, and massive nets to frolic about in, strung high above the ground. Many of the structures here are designed for slightly older children, but Sylvia and Oriol still had plenty to do.
We also appeared to have the forest almost entirely to ourselves, a stark contrast to the slightly frantic LEGO-crazy crowds at the theme park the day before.
After a pretty packed break, we finally scurried off to the airport with some wonderful memories as well as random LEGO bricks in all of our pockets, which we kept discovering for weeks afterwards. Perfect prompts to do more talking about our time in Billund, not that the twins needed much prompting on that front.
