Nevada – Family Vacation Guide

When you think Nevada it’s undeniable that the glitz and glamour of Vegas are front and center. And Vegas can be a surprisingly great destination for families offering shows, adventurous activities and exciting hotels kids love. Beyond the City of Sin, Nevada also boasts fantastic skiing and snowboarding, national parks for exploring and plenty of day trips to keep the whole family busy.

Where to Go

No trip to Nevada is truly complete without a stop in Las Vegas. Here kids can travel around the world on The Strip in hotels like The Venetian and Paris Las Vegas. Our top picks for family-friendly hotels are the Mandalay Bay which features an indoor beach with real sand and a wave pool for kids to splash around in if it gets too hot in the dry Nevada heat, and the Bellaggio with its famous fountains.

Las Vegas is also a great home base for day trips to the Hoover Dam or the Grand Canyon.

Though Nevada is better known for it’s hot, dry climate. You can also find great snow here in the winter and destinations like Lake Tahoe, which straddles the border of Nevada and California, have many ski resorts, cabins and hotels to choose from to accommodate families.

What to Do

Las Vegas

Vegas is a (surprisingly) kid-friendly destination with plenty to keep the whole family busy.

  • Walk the famous Strip and oggle pyramids, the Eiffel Towel and the dancing lights and water of the Bellaggio fountain.
  • See one of the world-famous shows. From high-flying acts like Cirque du Soleil to head-scratching magic shows and over-the-top concerts, there is something to delight everyone.
  • The Discovery Children’s Museum is a must-do for kids with hits like Patent Pending for young inventors and Water World where young kids can run boats down mini rivers and send balls down water tracks.
  • Thrill seekers will love the Stratosphere. Rides at this hotel include The Tower that reaches 1,149 ft.

Lake Tahoe

With a stunning blue lake set in the mountains and straddling the Nevada-California border, Lake Tahoe is a great spot for families in all seasons.

  • In the summer you can take a dip, kayak, paddleboard, jet ski and enjoy many more fun water activities.
  • Hike one of the many trails, including a portion of the Pacific Crest Trail.
  • Bring the ski and snowboard gear to the mountains in the winter for runs with unforgettable views and stay in a cozy cabin or luxurious resort.

Parks & Natural Wonders

Natural beauty is on full display in Nevada with strange and wonderful sights you won’t find anywhere else.

  • Red Rock Canyon is true to its name with gorgeous, towering red cliffs and plenty of trails for hiking, horseback riding and biking.
  • Valley of Fire State Park is Nevada’s oldest state park. Kids will love the naturally occurring rock arches and spotting the petroglyphs etched into the stones by Native Americans thousands of years ago.
  • Many visiting Vegas will rent a car and drive to the Arizona border, where they can visit the North Rim of the Grand Canyon. Just a couple of hours away, some say this view is the better of the two rim vistas.

Hoover Dam

Near the Nevada-Arizona border, The Hoover Dam is an easy day trip from Las Vegas and an inspiring feat of engineering up close. Over 1,200 ft long and 725 ft high, it creates Lake Mead – the the largest reservoir in the country when it’s full.

Getting Around

A car isn’t necessary in Las Vegas since much of what you’ll want to see is walkable or accessible by the monorail and bus systems that run up and down the Strip. You can also take a day tour to the Hoover Dam or the Grand Canyon with transportation included. However, if you want more flexibility or to get to some of the more remote areas of Nevada, a car is recommended.
