Wyoming – Family Vacation Guide

Wide open plains, dramatic blue skies, diverse wildlife and spectacular landscapes including the soaring mountains of the Teton Range and placid blue lakes await families who explore this stretch of pristine wilderness. Hot springs, history and the famously gorgeous Yellowstone National Park are just a few of the other reasons to pack your wagon (er car) and head to this part of the Wild West.

Where to Go

The Teton Range valley of Jackson Hole is home to three ski valleys for those who are looking for a winter adventure. The National Museum of Wildlife Art here has works by Andy Warhol and Georgia O’Keeffe. It also makes a great base for exploring Grand Teton National Park and Yellowstone National Park, just an hour north of Jackson Hole on one of the most scenic drives in the country.

Grand Teton National Park

Just 10 miles from Yellowstone National Park, you’ll find the more hidden gem, Grand Teton National Park and its rising peaks. This is skiing and hiking at its peak. (Pun intended.)

Yellowstone National Park

Yellowstone National Park is an absolute must on any vacation to Wyoming. Dramatic canyons, spewing geysers and forests surrounding pristine lakes are all found here. Take a hike, go boating, do some back country camping or have kids partake in the Junior Rangers Program.

What to Do

  • Visit the National Elk Refuge in Jackson Hole where kids can spot these animals and other wildlife. The herd reaches up to 7,000 in the winter and sleigh rides are also available during the colder months.
  • Walk on boardwalks through hauntingly beautiful landscapes of steaming pools and plateaus at Mammoth Hot Springs.
  • For a true taste of the Old West, visit the Buffalo Bill Center for the West, a series of museums that range from Buffalo Bills Wild West shows to the Plains Indian Museum. Kids are sure to pack in a lot of learning while also having fun.
  • The Jackson Hole Mountain Resort is one of the most famous destinations for skiers and snowboarders. From resorts to hotels to bed & breakfasts, there’s no shortage of places to stay at the mountain so you and the kids can hit the slopes.

Getting Around

A car is best if you plan to explore the parks and get off the beaten path. However, Jackson Hole does have a START bus that is an easy way of travelling around the valley. A one-way trip from the town of Jackson to Teton Village is $3.00 per person. You can also take some guided tours that include transportation from Jackson to Grand Teton and Yellowstone.
