Why families in the know are keeping lovely Las Colinas a secret!

Last updated 14th October 2023

Nestled in the scenic landscape of Alicante, Las Colinas Golf and Country Club is an exclusive, multi-award winning resort which blends luxury, relaxation and sport with a warm, family atmosphere. Colin Streater and his family visited for a special celebration late this summer and couldn’t have been more impressed.

Find Las Colinas just 45 minutes from Alicante Airport

The literal translation of Las Colinas Golf and Country Club is “ The Hills’. And while the terrain isn’t as rugged as in some in the Alicante region, I quickly realised on the beautiful drive from Alicante Airport that the resort’s setting gives it a wonderful sense of peace and quiet. Perfect if, like us, you’re in need of a rejuvenating stay.

However, after our early morning flight, the first priority, after check-in, was to grab some food. Stylish unik restaurant overlooks the 18th hole and offers an innovative culinary experience with a creative fusion of Mediterranean and Asian flavours. I opted for a Japanese Poke and was blown away by its freshness and sophistication. Although the rest of the menu also features an array of exciting flavours to delight taste buds and meet practically all dietary requirement, plus we couldn’t fault the excellent service and warm and friendly ambience.

Eat your way round the world without leaving the resort

Generally, food is always a highlight of any trip for us, and we weren’t disappointed with the offering at Las Colinas. Especially as there are four restaurants to choose from, our favourite being Il Palco, which is located on the edge of the forest, with an interior designed by Pepe Leal. It’s a true delight for families seeking authentic Italian flavours, and the charming setting and staff provide the perfect backdrop for a relaxed family meal. From wood-fired pizzas to homemade pasta dishes, it captures the essence of Italy flawlessly, satisfying even the most discerning taste buds. Children are welcomed with open arms, making it an ideal spot for a family celebration or a casual evening out.  On our visit we opted for the Baked corvina fillet with a Rosemary flavoured olive and Parmesan cheese crust, and Spinach ravioli with ricotta cheese filling, both of which were amazing.

Although, I think my favourite meal of the entire trip was at the resort’s newly opened umawa restaurant where chef Alfonso (Fonsi) Lillo has created a magnificent fusion of Japanese, Peruvian and Mexican dishes, reinterpreting traditional techniques and flavours in a contemporary style. I was especially impressed with their fresh Wakame Salad, pan fried prawns with Kimchi mayonnaise, and flamed salmon nigiri with lime.

Golf for all ages and stages comes with mesmerising views

Understandably, with the range of food available, eventually we had to start thinking about burning a few of the calories off with a little exercise. Luckily, Las Colinas Golf and Country Club is built around an award-winning golf course. The Championship Golf Course at the very heart of the resort was meticulously designed by renowned architect Cabell B. Robinson, and offers a challenging yet enjoyable experience for players of all levels and ages. However, it’s also surrounded by breathtaking scenery and carefully preserved nature, so provides a serene backdrop for a day on the green.

Families can bond over a friendly game, with options for lessons at the Toptracer driving range or short game practice at the Miguel Angel Jimenez’ ‘short game area’. And for budding stars of the future there’s even the Las Colinas Junior Golf Academy for kids aged between 6 and 18 years.

Take a short stroll to one of the top 5 Alicante beaches

Then, just a short stroll from the resort, you come to WOW Beach, which is private to Las Colinas and also close to La Glea beach: one of the top five beaches in Alicante. Though, nothing is missing for families on WOW itself, from sun loungers and endless Mediterranean views to a bar, excellent restaurant and infinity pool. So it’s the ideal place to relax and soak up the sun away from crowds, but still within easy reach of beautiful La Glea’s buzzy vibe.

On our visit we stayed for lunch and tried the Paella which was prepared in the traditional way and one of the highlights of the trip.  The food at WOW, as everywhere else in the resort, was of an incredibly high standard. And good to know that during summer, Il Palco serves dinner on the beach, if you don’t want to drag yourself away from the waterfront in the evening.

Hop from Alicante to Murcia and discover historic Cartagena

In nearby Cartagena you’ve another layer of exploration and adventure to add to a family holiday at Las Colinas. This fascinating city even boasts an ancient Roman amphitheatre, as well as museums, and an historic harbour, so families can really immerse themselves in the rich cultural heritage, take guided tours or explore at their own pace. It’s also an easy day out from the resort and great for giving older kids a deeper understanding of Spain’s vibrant history.

How to live like Norwegian lottery winners, for a little

Las Colinas Golf and Country Club is a well-rounded and luxurious destination for families where an exclusive selection of real-estate ranges from spacious, modern villas to elegant apartments. And, not only does it offer both comfort, and sophistication, there’s even the opportunity to create your own bespoke space: as a family of Norwegian lottery winners recently chose to do.

However, for a temporary brush with that lifestyle, villa and apartment rentals are also available, so families can dip into the Las Colinas experience. We stayed in the Modroño Villa which was simply incredible with bright open plan architecture and a private pool: perfect for an early morning swim. Although we particularly liked the sense of a safe, secluded environment which could be as private as we wanted, but still gave us access to all the resort activities.

Be as active or as idle as you like at luxe Las Colinas

It’s interesting to note, that neither real estate or golf dominates here, meaning families can enjoy one without the other, or simply opt for a classic southern Spanish beach holiday.

Nevertheless, it would be a shame to miss out on the facilities at Las Colinas, especially as the resort offers such a wide range including swimming pools, tennis and Padel courts, along with a sport and health club with state of the art gym and wellness area which features massage, beauty treatments and yoga lessons.  There are even two scenic trails for cycling, running or walking through the protected Mediterranean forest that surrounds the resort.

WOW Beach, umawa, Il Palco, and unik restaurants offer incredible dining experiences. Combine that with a stunning championship golf course, diverse leisure facilities for all ages and nearby Cartagena, and it’s not going too far to say Las Colinas has everything you need for a perfect family holiday on the Costa Blanca.
