Winter Family Fun Just A Train Ride Away From New York City

Last updated 24th January 2019

Plenty of winter breaks are on the horizon and parents are often left wondering what to do with their little balls of energy. Just a skip and a hop from New York City, Westchester County offers ample opportunities for cold weather family fun. Here are the top activities — accessible from NYC by public transportation — that will keep the little ones entertained all winter long:

  • Wolf Conservation Center
The Wolf Conservation Center teaches visitors about wolves, their relationship to the environment and the human role in protecting their future. Visitors traveling from NYC can take the Metro-North Harlem Line to the Katonah station and then take a quick taxi to the WCC.
  • Legoland Discovery Center
The ultimate indoor LEGO playground, the Legoland Discovery Center offers indoor fun with rides, play zones, a 4D cinema and more. From NYC take the Metro North Hudson Line train to the Yonkers stop then take the #78 Bus at Getty Square to Ridge Hill
  • Westchester Children’s Museum
Let your little one explore at the Westchester Children’s Museum. Its Young Discoverers series offers story time, crafts and more. The Metro North New Haven line to Rye Station takes visitors to the museum. There are discounts on admission for MTA travelers, too.
  • Jacob Burns Film Center
Popcorn, anyone? Enjoy weekend family-friendly movies at Jacob Burns Film Center or check out The Prince of Egypt as part of Alamo Drafthouse’s Kids Camp. All proceeds from the donation-based show go to a local charity. Take the Metro-North Harlem Line train to Pleasantville. Go upstairs near the head of the train, and exit to the right and then left to the corner of Wheeler Ave. and Manville Rd. The JBFC Theater is on Manville Rd. one block to the right around the corner.
  • Rocking Horse Ranch
Pretend you’re on summer break with a trip to the indoor water park at Rocking Horse Ranch in the Hudson Valley. Take the Metro North or Amtrak to Poughkeepsie. If you call the resort 48 hours in advance, they will arrange for a pickup service to meet you at the Poughkeepsie Train Station.

All aboard! Next stop: Westchester, NY.
