What to Do

  • Drive through Glacier National Park and take in all its awe-inspiring beauty. Head to North Fork if you have a car that can handle unpaved roads and you’ll be rewarded with fewer crowds. Don’t miss Lake McDonald Valley featuring the largest lake in the park and Logan Pass where soaring mountains tower over wildflowers and babbling streams.
  • Kids will love stopping along Dinosaur Trail, full of museums with displays of the many dinosaurs that have been excavated in the state.
  • During the summer, splash around at Electric City Waterpark in Great Falls.
  • Sneak some history into the trip with a visit to Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument, but beware that rattlesnakes have been known to be spotted here.
  • The Grizzly & Wolf Discovery Center is a non-profit organization where the animals are used for educational purposes. Kids can see the animals and even hide food in the bear enclosures for the bears to find and eat.
  • In the winter, skip crowded Colorado and head to Montana for incredible skiing and snowboarding at one of the many resorts here.

Getting Around

Amtrak can get you around the northern part of the state, but for real exploring a car is best. Scenic highways make for pleasant drives.
