Why Go
What could be better than a pool area that is 2,000-feet-long, with 770,000-gallons of water, consisting of nine interconnecting pools that are attached via a water slide system with the world’s first water elevator waiting at the bottom to take you right back up again? Nothing! And, Grand Wailea Resort’s water slides are just one of the many reasons families will love staying at this tropical island retreat! Families will also love taking advantage of the sweeping ocean views, walking around the expansive hotel grounds including a beautiful beach which is meticulously groomed, service is top notch, and the dining options are droolworthy. There are a host of kid & teen activities on property and while the kids are playing don’t forget to book yourself a spa treatment at the Spa Grande, recipient of the 2017 Forbes Four Star Award.
What to Do
With one of the most impressive pool areas I have ever seen, a gorgeous beach, nearby hiking trails, water sports and an impressive schedule of resort activities such as scuba diving lessons, beach yoga, botanical and cultural tours, and a luau the one thing you won’t be is bored. While there is plenty to do on property Maui is such an incredible island it would be a shame not to explore a little bit outside the resort as well. Here are my top recommendations of things to do in Maui.
- Road to Hana- The total drive is a 64 miles but the views along the way are absolutely breathtaking. There are many mile markers along the way to stop, hike, take in waterfalls, and snap photos of the stunning views. The first attraction is Twin Falls located about 30 miles from Grand Wailea. Pro Tip- leave before 8 am to beat the crowds and make it to as many attractions as you can before needing to head back to Wailea. This is an all day experience, best suited for older kids, and is not good for those who suffer from motion sickness.
- Iao Valley State Park- Approximately 20 minutes from Grand Wailea you will find Iao Valley a National Natural Landmark that is perfect for families. Here you will find a short trail that leads you to several beautiful waterfalls including an area where you can pay to jump in with a provided life vest and swim under and around a gorgeous waterfall. The kids will also love all the gorgeous birds on the property like the extravagant peacocks.
- Surf Lessons- When in Rome, right? Maui is an epicentre of surf enthusiasts and there is no better place to learn to surf than while you are in town.
- Head to Lahaina- visit the Banyan Tree, devour some incredible shaved ice, stroll the one-of-a-kind shops and dine with an ocean view. Lahaina is one of the older parts of the island which gives it a unique character. There are plenty of kid-friendly shop and eateries making it an excellent place to hang out as a family.
Accommodations for Families
Grand Wailea offers a variety of room configurations from standard garden or ocean views with one king or two queen beds to the lavish suites with tucked inside Napua Tower (exclusive access only) which are provided with continental breakfast, afternoon tea, cocktails & hors d’oeuvres, and desserts each day amongst other concierge amenities. Larger parties can also stay at the Ho’olei villas on property which boast two-story accommodations, fully equipped kitchens, private elevator, attached garage, and exclusive services.
Amenities for Kids
Located on property is a 20,000-square-foot facility called The Rock which is like a mini-resort for kids & teens. The building houses Camp Grande, Ohana Hale, and The Spot. Here kids can join in on activities such as fresh orchid lei making, hula lessons, video games, lego wall and much more! Camp Grande is an interactive kids camp and fees do apply. Also, located in The Rock is one of my kid’s favorite activities at Grand Wailea- the Fishpipe. The Fishpipe is the world’s first rotating barrel ride. Guests hop in the clear bubble-like chamber which is filled with a small amount of water. The chamber is closed and the barrel begins to spin taking the guests inside on a 90 second ride that feels like you are going down a mile long water slide. There is a fee involved but this experience is totally worth it!
Kid Friendly Dining
From a quick bite by the pool to a luxurious ocean front dinner, decadent brunch or grab & go, you can find everything you are looking for at Grand Wailea. Known for their family-friendliness the eateries on property cater to kids regardless of their palate type offering kids menus with classic finger food fare. There are also chef prepared healthier choices as well. My kids love the Sunrise Family Buffet offered at the Grand Dining Room. Bonus- kids 5 & under dine here free for breakfast! Another kid-approved choice is splitting appetizers at the swim up Grotto Bar. Treat the kids with a non-alcoholic drink like the cookies ‘n cream smoothie.
