Today it’s the largest weekend market in the world, attracts over 200,000 visitors each weekend, has more than 15,000 stalls and sells everything from contemporary art to street food.
You probably won’t be surprised to find that kids particularly like this type of shopping, not least because it’s so colourful and there’s always something going on, so the stop and stare potential is huge.

Although if it’s real wonders you want, nearby Vachirabenjatas Park is home to the Bangkok Butterfly Garden and Insectarium where you can see thousands of delicate butterflies fluttering about under an astonishing 15m high dome.

Though kids will probably be most impressed by the giant, floating ‘Happiness’ sculpture outside: don’t tell them it’s a lotus flower, let them guess.
