How Best Western Chatuchak wins for family breaks

Just a few steps away from iconic Chatachuk Market, Best Western Chatuchack makes an ideal base for family breaks in Bangkok. The biggest weekend market in the world is certainly tempting to browse on Saturday or Sunday, but the hotel also sits close to Kamphaeng Phet MRT subway station, making the rest of Bangkok easy to browse too.

If you want a hint of how immersed you are in the city here, just take a look out of your window: every single one of the hotel’s 192 rooms and suites features views of Bangkok to take your breath away.

As well as all there is to see outside, indoors all rooms and suites come with Best Western signature king or twin beds, rainfall showers in the bathrooms and entertainment systems. Clean, cool and contemporary furniture is offset by gleaming wood floors and, if you need more room, the spacious 32m² Junior Suite features extra living space.

The Chatuchak Restaurant opens with buffet breakfast from 6am every morning – perfect timing for younger kids – then serves a mix of local and international dishes all day. Although it’s up on the sixth floor where things get interesting in the evening. Here, The Plot Twist Bar practically surrounds you on all sides with floor to ceiling windows overlooking dazzling after-dark Chatuchak. Stop for a cocktail any night and live music will be playing or, if you’re earlier to bed, you could just drop by to admire the view.

Best Western Chatuchak makes a great base for easy exploring

Of course you want to explore Bangkok, but you don’t want to spend all your time getting to know the city’s transport system. So, based on its location alone, you really get the feeling Best Western Chatuchak understands family breaks perfectly. If you need more proof of that, take a look at how much there is to see and do with kids just a short walk from the hotel.

Chatuchak Market, the largest weekend market in the world

Don’t miss the largest weekend market in the world

Way back in 1938, Field Marshal Plaek Pibunsongkhram, the third prime minister of Thailand, announced every major city should have a flea market and so Chatuchak was born. Of course, the Field Marshal wasn’t wrong: legends like the Marché aux Puces Clignancourt in Paris have been proving the popularity of flea markets since the 17th century. However, Chatachuk is much more than your ordinary ‘flea’.

Today it’s the largest weekend market in the world, attracts over 200,000 visitors each weekend, has more than 15,000 stalls and sells everything from contemporary art to street food.

You probably won’t be surprised to find that kids particularly like this type of shopping, not least because it’s so colourful and there’s always something going on, so the stop and stare potential is huge.

Discover the freshest take on farmer’s markets

Just across the road from Chatuchak Market, Or-Tor-Kor might be the most phenomenal farmer’s market you’ve ever visited. It’s certainly said to be one of the freshest fresh-produce markets in the world. And the fact that chefs from many of Bangkok’s top restaurants shop here is always a good sign.

Drop in after you’ve visited the weekend market or come any time really, Or-Tor-Kor is open seven days a week from 6am to 6pm.

Take your pick of Chatuchak parks

When you’re all shopped out, catch a breath at Queen Sirikit Park. This Chatuchak botanical garden is famous for its incredible diversity, so expect children to be amazed by the towering palms and you can save your amazement for wonders like over 200 species of waterlilies.

Although if it’s real wonders you want, nearby Vachirabenjatas Park is home to the Bangkok Butterfly Garden and Insectarium where you can see thousands of delicate butterflies fluttering about under an astonishing 15m high dome.

Make time for the art at MOCA

Also in Chatuchak, MOCA Bangkok is the largest contemporary art museum in Asia and surprisingly diverse, considering it’s principally a private collection.

However, what’s most remarkable about the museum is the building itself. Custom designed to create light, airy exhibition spaces as contemporary as the art itself, it’s an inspiring sight.

Though kids will probably be most impressed by the giant, floating ‘Happiness’ sculpture outside: don’t tell them it’s a lotus flower, let them guess.

Authentic Bangkok from Best Western Chatuchak

Just a 30 minute walk from the hotel, the districts of Saphankwai and Ari are near neighbours, but couldn’t be more different.

Ari is the rising star district for cool coffee shops and restaurants, hang out spaces and independent stores.

Then, by complete contrast, nearby Saphankwai gives you a glimpse of a more traditional Bangkok where street food stalls trade night and day, and charming, old style shop-houses invite you to make them TikTok famous.
