The Amtrak Coast Starlight: A Scenic Family Train Ride Across the West Coast

Last updated 18th December 2018

The West Coast is legendary for its scenery. There’s no better way to take in the vast and varying beauty the US region has to offer than by train. Not only do trains allow you and the kids to enjoy the pristine landscapes rolling by as you travel, but it also means you don’t have to deal with the hassle of airport security.

And there’s one other major reason this train ride is the ultimate way to take in all the West Coast has to offer: cost.

The Amtrak Coast Starlight Train Ride starts at just $98 per person. Yes, you read that correctly. To cash in on the super low price you need to book online well in advance, but the early planning is well worth it.

Beginning in Seattle, the Amtrak Coast Starlight chugs along through some of the most breathtaking terrain the US has to offer as it heads down the coast of the Pacific Northwest. From snow-capped mountain peaks to lush forests and lakes, the changing landscapes will have the whole family pressing their noses to the glass.

As it hits California, you’ll be treated to Pacific Ocean shoreline views. Passing through Sacramento, the San Francisco Bay Area and Santa Barbara before finally ending in Los Angeles, the Amtrak Coast Starlight gives families a little taste of all the West Coast has to offer.

The trip takes 35 hours total and the train it outfitted with Superliner Sleeping and Dining Cars, including a Superliner Family Bedroom and a Bedroom Suite, both of which can sleep up to four guests. A Sightseer Lounge Car is the optimal spot for taking in the scenic spots along the way. You can also, of course, do the trip in reverse, beginning in Los Angeles and ending in Seattle.

With a trip this good, maybe the West Coast really is the best coast.
