ST. AUGUSTINE
St. Augustine is known as the “Nation’s Oldest City,” so it’s heaven for a family of history lovers like you. Founded in 1565 by the Spanish explorer Don Pedro Menendez de Aviles, it naturally has a strong Spanish presence. Even today, landmarks like the 18th century Spanish Renaissance Cathedral Basilica of St. Augustine and the Castillo de San Marcos fortress have the power to impress.
Of course, you should never miss historical big hitters like Ponce de León’s Fountain of Youth – a wonderful 15-acre park that would put a spring in anyone’s step. And, make time for just wandering the charming city streets and immersing yourself in the atmosphere as well as its monuments and museums.
But St. Augustine isn’t all about the past, far from it. The present comes with 42 miles of Atlantic beaches for kids to play on, several of them considered to be among Florida’s loveliest. Then, taking it easy over brunch, lunch or dinner is as good as it gets, from freshly caught fish to perfect paella. And, if you want to go wild, just step outside; St. Augustine is surrounded by natural beauty, perfect for hiking, biking, kayaking or simply admiring.
