Ecuador – Family Vacation Guide

This country is small, but there’s so much to see and do in Ecuador, from the tropical Amazon rainforest to the snow-capped Andes to the Galapagos Islands. There’s plenty of adventure here: mountain biking, hiking, horseback riding. Add to that a fascinating culture, with shamans who still still practice traditions handed down for generations and local artisans who hand-weave colorful textiles, and you have an all-star destination for families.

Why Go

  • Nature and Biodiversity

With giant hummingbirds, pumas, foxes inhabiting lakes and lagoons and forests, the nature and wildlife is riveting.

  • Spectacular Landscapes

You can’t come to Ecuador without seeing the Andes Mountains. Don’t miss Cotopaxi — an active volcano.

  • Choice of Accommodation

A wide range of family accommodation includes boutique hotels, haciendas, eco-lodges, adventure lodges and more.

Where to Go

The Galapagos

Literally the middle of the world, Ecuador is one of the smallest South American countries and probably best known for the Galapagos Islands — which are quite tricky to reach. To the untrained eye, the wildlife here is astonishing and a guided river tour is mesmerizing for kids.

The Andes

Ecuador is known for the Andes, more than its fair share of volcanoes and Bellavista Cloudforest, famous for a vast population of hummingbirds. Worth remembering: Several Ecuadorian volcanoes are live, so you should check status reports before you book any travel.

Quito

Don’t miss the capital of Quito: It’s one of the finest colonial cities on the continent and the historic center is a World Heritage site.

What to Do

  • Old Town, Quito
You can’t miss a visit to Quito’s old town, with its amazing monasteries and convents. With its green-and-gold domes, Iglesia de la Compañía de Jesús is Quito’s most amazing church and a highlight of a visit to the Old Town.
  • The Galapagos
Many of the creatures in these islands are found nowhere else in the world
  • Otavalo Market, Andes
Dating back hundreds of years, this amazing weekly market sells handmade traditional crafts.
  • Parque Nacional Yasuní
This massive park is made up of tropical rainforest, rivers, wetlands and more. You’ll spot rare birds and — if you’re lucky, elusive pumas and jaguars.

Getting Around

It’s a fairly tiny country and exploring by car is interesting for older kids and the roads in most areas are excellent.
