Last updated 26th July 2022

If you’ve been to Philadelphia, you’ve probably already posed with the iconic LOVE sign and run up the famed Rocky Steps. Go beyond sampling cheesesteaks and dig deeper in the city of Brotherly Love with these off-the-beaten-path and newer attractions perfect for families.

The Bourse

There’s a new food hall in town and you have to see it to believe it. The Bourse is brand new and has something for everyone in your pack. Located directly across from Independence Mall, this iconic 1891 building has been meticulously renovated and beautifully designed to house food vendors galore.

The Bourse is ideal for families thanks to the endless dining options found inside. From fresh Italian to Indian street food to fried chicken, everyone in your family can satisfy their tastes and saddle up to the big open seating area located in the center.

Fishtown

The last time you visited Philadelphia, it’s likely Fishtown was not on your radar. But within the last three to five years, this neighborhood has truly transformed into a hotspot. With new buildings going up everyday, Fishtown is the perfect blend of old and new.

Take a family stroll and you will find a lively collection of murals and street art. And the rest of the area is just as colorful. Kids will also love the aquamarine raised train tracks, eye-catching doorways and decorative trash cans found in this neighborhood.

For some happy hour fun, head to Evil Genius Brewery, which prides itself on being kid-friendly. Pop in for one of their cleverly titled beers and some light snacks. Pro tip: head there around 5pm if you want some extra space. At around 6pm it starts to fill up.

For dinner in the area, Cheu Fishtown is a must. This historic building that was once a brick stable for horses has now been transformed into the hottest place in town to slurp down ramen noodles and munch on some of the best rice bowls, buns and dumplings in town.

The Academy of Natural Sciences

Dragons and unicorns and mermaids, oh my! The brand new Mythical Creatures exhibit at The Academy of Natural Sciences is a must for families. Kids will love learning about ancient stories and folklore and hearing about different versions of mythical creature from all over the world.

Large displays of each animal make a great play are for children. They can even pose for fun pictures alongside their favorite monster or mermaid. Interactive booths encourage group fun for kids of all ages.

Even if you’ve been to The Academy of Natural Sciences before, this new exhibit is worth a trip back.

One Liberty Observation Deck

One of the best ways to experience Philadelphia is from fifty seven floors up in the air at One Liberty Observation Deck. This awesome attraction, which opened in 2015, is walking distance from all the usual major tourist spots. This experience is fun to the max from the second you walk in. Even the elevator ride to the top floor is entertaining.

Once you’ve reached the top, your family can enjoy incredible panoramic views of the city. What’s even better is letting your kids play with the Interactive Technology Boards. Kids (and adults) can zoom in for a closer look at the neighborhood they’re seeing right in front of them. Landmarks and attractions pop up on the screen and might even spark an idea of something to add to your itinerary for the day. For a more guided experience, be sure to visit on a Friday, Saturday or Sunday for a free tour.

For a nearby bite, be sure to check out Goldie, which opened in 2017. The restaurant, which is 100% vegan and Kosher, is filled with tasty falafel, fries and Tehina shakes. For a second option, head right downstairs to The Rooster. It’s the same owner as Goldie and was overhauled and rebranded in 2018. Think old fashion diner meets Jewish deli and you’ve got The Rooster. Order right at the counter, grab a table and your food will be delivered to you in no time.
