Visiting San Diego Zoo and Safari Park

Last updated 16th October 2017

Why go?

Arguably the best zoo in the US, San Diego’s Balboa Park is an absolute must-visit for any family on vacation in the city. It is sure to leave the whole family enchanted by the stunning and unique animals and attractions found here.

What to do

Aside from over 800 rare and exotic species, including giant pandas, the site has a safari park, and amusement rides, such as a carousel and steam train. Take a hot air balloon ride and float 400 ft above it all.

But visiting those should only be part of your visit to Balboa Park. Don’t miss the San Diego Air & Space Museum and 14 other museums in the park, as well as the theater, art galleries and acres of lush gardens.

San Diego is a breezy maritime city with a colorful city center packed with casual family eateries; linger overnight to discover all its charms.

Getting around

Flights from major cities are offered to San Diego on all major airlines. The zoo is just north of the downtown area. You can rent a car or get there by public transit. The Rapid 215 and Route 7 both have stops at the Zoo and on Saturdays and Sundays two children (12 and under) can ride the MTS Bus and Trolley routes free with a paid adult.

Best time to visit: March to May and September to November are the best times to visit, the weather is warm and sunnyand there aren’t as many crowds as during the summer.
