Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, aka Christmas City USA, is a must-visit for those who love the holiday season. Named for the little town of Bethlehem by the German Moravian settlers who came to the area in the 1700s, the town is renowned for its Christmas markets, charming historic homes, and month-long holiday events to get you into the spirit. A sampling of the biggest events include:

Shop for Gifts at the Christkindlmarkt

For 25 years, this highly ranked holiday market takes place at Bethlehem’s Steel Stacks and includes aisle upon aisle of handmade arts and crafts. Santa Claus is on hand, as well a live Christmas music while you shop. The event its $9 for adults, $5 for children ages 6 to 12, and free for those under 5.

Take a Historic Holiday House Tour

The Bethlehem Historic District Association gathers a group of historic homes for a special open house during the holiday season. You’ll receive access into nine private homes to see how they are decorated for the holidays – all within walking distance. Tickets are $25 online, and $30 in person.

Bring Home a Bethlehem Star

For more than 75 years, a star overlooks Bethlehem, Pennsylvania from atop South Mountain, established by the Moravians. Since then, the star is a symbol around town, hanging as beacons of welcome light at homes, streets and businesses. You can bring home your own Moravian star sold at Christkindlmarkt or a number of shops on Bethlehem’s Main Street.

Stay at a National Historic Landmark

Historic Hotel Bethlehem is the hotel of choice. Bedecked during the holidays, the hotel has been a staple since 1922. Follow the self-guided holiday tour of the hotel (as a guest or just popping in), where you will see oversized ornaments in the lobby, the restaurants, and the mezzanine.

Enjoy a Christmas Carriage Ride

Explore the historic town in a horse-drawn carriage under the strewn holiday lights of town. The rides, operated by Bethlehem Carriage Company, range from $65 to $95.

Sing and Quote Along to Christmas Classics

ArtsQuest, located at Bethlehem Steel Stacks, celebrates the season with holiday movies we all know and love. Join others in holiday quote-a-long events for $10, on Wednesday nights at 7:30. You won’t be shushed when you recite favorite lines from classics like “National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation” and “Elf.”
