Your Cheat Sheet to Baggage Rules on Every Airlines

Avoid nasty surprises at the check-in desk with our guide to exactly what each airline will let you and your kids bring onboard.

American Airlines

Checked in luggage: For domestic flights, and flights to Mexico and the Caribbean the first checked bag starts at $25. For travel to Central and South America, the first checked bag is either free or $25 depending on the season.

Transatlantic flights get the first bag free and the second checked bag starts at $100. Transpacific flights allow two free checked bags.

Hand luggage: One carry-on bag and one personal item per passenger. The carry-on bag cannot exceed 22 x 14 x 9 inches (including handles and wheels) and the personal item must fit under the seat in front of you and cannot exceed 18 x 14 x 8 inches.

Diaper bags (1 per child), child safety seats, strollers and medical or mobility devices don’t count as your personal item or carry-on.

Delta Air Lines

Checked in luggage: The first checked bag for all domestic flights and flights to Canada and Mexico is $25 and must weigh less than 50 pounds. For other international destinations the first checked bag is free.

Hand luggage: One carry-on bag and one personal item per passenger of the standard sizes (22 x 14 x 9 inches and must fit under the seat).

Jetblue

Checked in luggage: The first checked bag is $25. Bags must not exceed 62″ in overall dimensions (length + width + height), including wheels/handles, or exceed 50 pounds.

Hand luggage: One carry-on bag and one personal item per passenger of the standard sizes (22 x 14 x 9 inches and must fit under the seat). Diaper bags, infant car seats and strollers are also permitted and do not count as a carry-on or personal item.

Southwest

Checked in luggage: First and second checked bags are free. Bags cannot exceed 62″ in overall dimensions and must weigh less than 50 pounds or fees may occur.

Hand luggage: One carry-on and one personal item per passenger is permitted. Carry-on luggage must not exceed 10 x 16 x 24 inches and personal items must fit under the seat in front of you.

Frontier

Checked in luggage: The first checked bag is $25 or $35 depending on the season.

Hand luggage: You are allowed one personal item at no cost. The first carry-on bag is charged. For the best deal, pay for your luggage with your ticket online when it’s $30, rather than at the gate when it’s $60. Carry-on bags may not exceed 35 pounds. Diaper bags are allowed at no extra cost.

British Airways

Checked in luggage: One free suitcase per person, maximum weight 50 pounds and maximum size 35in x 30in x 17in. Collapsible strollers, car seats and mobility aids such as wheel chairs are free to check in in addition to your suitcase.

Children aged two – eleven have the same baggage allowance as adults, and one cabin bag is allowed for an infant under two.

Hand luggage: One piece of luggage, max size 22 x 14 x 9 , plus one personal item.

Ryanair

Checked in luggage: Each piece of luggage, maximum weight 30 pounds, costs from $25 in low season and from $35 in high season when pre-purchased online.

Two items of baby equipment (one stroller plus one of the following items: car seat or booster seat or portable crib) are carried free per child.

Hand luggage: One main piece of hand luggage, max weight 20 pounds and max size 22in x 16in x 8in, (Family Traveller tip: these restrictions are smaller than most other airlines – don’t get caught out with an oversized bag!), plus one smaller bag, handbag or laptop case.

Parents travelling with a child ages eight days to 23 months on their lap are permitted an additional baby bag weighing no more than 10 pounds.

Virgin Atlantic

Checked in luggage: One free suitcase per passenger, maximum weight 50 pounds and maximum size 35in x 30in x 17in.

Collapsible strollers, car seats and mobility aids such as wheel chairs are free to check in in addition to your suitcase.

Infants travelling on the lap of a parent can have one piece of hand baggage weighing up to 50 pounds, and one piece of hand baggage weighing up to 13 pounds.

Hand luggage: One piece of luggage, max size 9in x 14in x 22in, plus one smaller bag, handbag or laptop case.

Easyjet

Checked in luggage: When bought online, each item of checked in luggage, maximum weight 45 pounds, costs from $15 depending on the route chosen.

Hand luggage: One cabin bag, maximum size of 22in x 18in x 10in. An additional handbag or laptop is not included.

Infants do not have a hand baggage allowance.

Emirates

Checked in luggage: One free suitcase per person, maximum weight 65 pounds and maximum total dimensions 118in. Parents travelling with infants are permitted on extra piece of checked-in baggage no bigger than 22 x 11 x 8in and no heavier than 22 pounds.

Hand luggage: One piece of hand luggage, either a handbag or laptop bag, no bigger than 22 x 15 x 8in and no heavier than 15 pounds, plus a carry-on crib or stroller.

Air France

Checked in luggage: One free suitcase per person, maximum weight 50 pounds and maximum total dimensions 62 in. Parents travelling with infants are permitted on extra piece of checked-in baggage no heavier than 22 pounds.

Hand luggage: One bag no bigger than22 x 15 x 8in, plus one handbag or laptop bag with a combined maximum weight of no more than 27 pounds. A collapsible stroller and car seat can be checked in or carried as hand luggage free of charge.
