An abandoned one-room schoolhouse in the Catskills has been turned into a two-bedroom boutique inn that you’ll never want to leave. Although the interior is modern, some traditional features (stained-glass windows, cast-iron school bell) have been preserved.

Wanderlust Hotel

This cheeky, boutique hotel is nestled in the Little India neighborhood of Singapore. It features an eclectic mix of design elements, from colored lighting to a typewriter couch to Pantone-colored rooms. It’s hard to believe this funky space was once a schoolhouse!

Hotel Da Estrela

Discover a historic gem in the heart of Portugal’s lively capital, Lisbon. Housed within the notable Condes de Paraty Palace, the 19-room escape combines classic school style with designer furnishings, chalkboard-style carpets and playful lime-green accents.

Kennedy School

In the early 1900s, kids used to go to this Portland, Oregon, elementary school to study the “three R’s.” Now it’s an upscale 57-room hotel. The original classrooms are bedrooms decorated with vintage desks and chalkboard walls. The cafeteria has been turned into a restaurant, and the auditorium is now a movie theater.

The Conservatorium Hotel

Once a music conservatory, the building has now been converted into a modern Amsterdam hotel. The location can’t be beat: it’s situated between the Van Gogh Museum and Vondelpark.

Miss Clara

This hip 92-room design-focused boutique hotel in Stockholm, Sweden, was once the Ateneum girls’ school. The interior mixes subtle references to its former incarnation (dorm-style beds, original arched windows) with Scandinavian cool.

The Old Schoolhouse

The Ocean House is a spectacular beachfront resort in Watch Hill, Rhode Island. Hidden away next door is a one-room schoolhouse from 1852 that’s now part of the property’s Cottage Collection. You’ll find waterfront views, a fireplace and a full kitchen.

Washington School House

Named after our first president, this former Park City, Utah, school opened in 1889 and has been transformed into a luxe 12-room alpine lodge, complete with a fine-art collection, ski lounge and private fine dining. It also has a stunning heated pool that’s built into the hillside.

Whitley Hall Hotel

Nestled in the rolling countryside of Yorkshire, England, you’ll find the luxurious and stately Whitley Hall. The Tudor structure began as a private residence (allegedly hosting Mary, Queen of Scots for a night), was converted into a boys’ boarding school, and then became a hotel a restaurant.
