Children’s Museum of Indianapolis Expands with Sports Legends

Last updated 16th May 2018

The award-winning Children’s Museum of Indianapolis continues to provide the absolute best in interactive and educational programming with its latest expansion. The new $38.5-million, 7.5-acre Riley Children’s Health Sports Legends Experiences will be a new national model for family learning in health and fitness through sports.

The new campus will feature 14 outdoor and indoor experiences to reinforce active, healthy lifestyles through sports for all ages. Indoor programs will be open-year round when the experience opens this spring, with outdoor activities open between March and October. New components include:

  • Efroymson Pavilion and Plaza. The indoor venue will offer changing interactive exhibits and a permanent gallery showcasing art works of the National Art Museum of Sport. Sports legends will be the feature of this indoor venue, from players, owners, sports milestones and game history.
  • Indiana Pacers and Indiana Fever Basketball Experience. Showcasing the Indiana Pacers national team, this area will house outdoor basketball courts with baskets of all sizes and abilities.
  • Indiana Colts Football Experience. Families can practice their football skills with the Colts’ theme and experiences.
  • Indy Fuel Hockey Experience. Families can practice their puck-handling skills on this artificial ice hockey surface.
  • Indianapolis Motor Speedway Pedal Car Racetrack Experience. As home to the Indy 500, of course the museum had to include a racing experience for the kids, with pedal cars representing stock and muscle cars.

Other sport experiences include tennis, baseball, soccer and golf. An exercise path with exercise stations and a shock-absorbing track will also be available, with a Sports Legends Avenue of Champions featuring life-size sculptures of sports legends.

Little kids will especially love the 60-foot fantasy tree, inspired by Disney’s Animal Kingdom’s Tree of Life. Kids can climb among giant pieces of sports equipment in this treehouse.
