Take an Easy Day Trip from Denver to Winter Park on the Ski Train

Last updated 16th January 2018

Ski and snowboard days in Colorado are even more accessible now thanks to The Winter Park Express ski train. Running January 5 – March 25, the double-decker train goes from Denver straight to the base of the mountains on Saturdays and Sundays. It’s the perfect way for families to stay in Denver and have access to all the booming city has to offer while still being able to spend a day, weekend or even a full week skiing. Plus, now parents and kids can both enjoy a relaxed and scenic route to the ski trails instead of worrying about the headache of traffic or driving on icy or snow-packed roads. Take in gorgeous mountain views as you snake up the Rocky Mountains and through over 30 tunnels, or sneak in a nap after a long day hitting the slopes.

This unique train route, first beginning in 1940 and then reopening with Amtrak just last year, is the only ski train in the US that takes riders right from the heart of a city straight to the chairlifts with no shuttles or other transportation necessary. It’s that easy.

The train will additionally run on every first Friday of the month this season. The trip takes just two hours and departs Denver’s Union Station at 9 am with the return train leaving Winter Park at 4:30 pm. Another bonus this year? Reduced fares mean one-way tickets start at just $29 for adults and kids ages 2-12 get to ride for half price with a ticketed adult.

With Winter Park and other Colorado ski resorts offering deals this month for newbies, there’s never been a better time to take to the mountains.
