Health Advice for Winter Holidays

Last updated 6th June 2017

News and tips to keep your family well this winter, including winter sun essentials and advice on boosting your immune system.

Winter sun rules

If you are taking the family skiing this winter, don’t forget to prioritise sun protection; the snow reflects up to 80 per cent of the UV light from the sun, meaning that you are often hit by the same rays twice. Always wear a lip balm with a high SPF and a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 plus. We like the new Sun Protection SPF 50+ from P20, £24.49, which works for the whole family and offers longer- lasting protection – perfect for a day on the slopes. Apply liberally to all exposed skin, not forgetting lips, ears, eyes and neck.

Boost your immune system naturally

Want to stay healthy this winter? There’s more to it than getting enough sleep and eating a diet packed with fruit and vegetables (the US guidelines tell people to aim for nine portions a day, rather than our rather meagre five). New research by Norwegian scientists has also identifiedyoga as being a key immunity booster. In the daily battle against the common cold, supplements that enhance your immune system can also be helpful. We like Daily Immunity by Food Science of Vermont, £25.
