The beaches are stunning, of course, but what’s missing on them might surprise you. The white sand, shell shores, blue seas and lush greenery are all there, you just won’t find any crowds.
If you like a little history in your family beach holiday, Fort Myers delivers there too. Start by touring the estates of two of America’s greatest inventors: Thomas Edison and Henry Ford. Their historic Fort Myers’ homes sit in acres of gardens, where hundreds of plants, from around the world flourish in year-round Southwest Florida sunshine.
Hop to the islands of Sanibel and Captiva for some of the world’s longest shell beaches, manatees off the dock and a high chance of dolphins just swimming by, while you’re having breakfast.
Fort Myers is amazing all by itself, but it’s also a morning’s drive from Orlando, so you can compare and contrast the theme park vibes.
Or if you want to mix up coasts, you can swap Gulf Coast Fort Myers for Miami’s Atlantic beaches in a few hours too. And of course, you aren’t far from astonishing Everglades National Park here either, for more wildlife adventures and iconic airboat rides.
