Dover Castle is the most iconic fortress in England. It commanded the gateway to the realm for nine centuries is sure to have cropped up in the kids’ history lessons. But if you think a visit to an ancient castle will make the kids drag their feet, think again. From climbing the Great Tower and meeting characters from the past, to witnessing spine-tingling drama in the Secret Wartime Tunnels, the Castle guarantees an action-packed family day out.
Dover Castle is sure to prove a particular family favourite this summer thanks to its exciting programme of weekend events. Check out its Roman Festival from 30-31 July, Siege of 1216 from 13-14 August and Castle Live! 27-28 August where kids can journey from the Iron Age to the Cold War all in one day.

Roman Festival
Sat 30 – Sun 31 July, 10am-5pm
Witness the might of the Roman Empire descending on Dover Castle. Be thrilled by the skill of the cavalry with their nimble and noble steeds and help decide who lives or dies in the brutal world of the Gladiators.
Siege of 1216
Sat 13 – Sun 14 August, 10am-5pm
Join the action 800-years on at Dover, when the castle came under siege. Roam among the gruesome history, meet the menacing characters and hear their gory stories. Jostle in the medieval marketplace before witnessing the drama of siege warfare.
Castle Live!
Sat 27 – Mon 29 August, 10am-5pm
Join the ultimate historical adventure through Dover Castle’s past, bringing together some of the best living history from across England into one place. Experience the blow by blow action of the Clash of Knights and the awesome might of the Roman Cavalry. Discover the castle’s past from the Iron Age to the Cold War in an incredible family bank holiday journey through time.

Price: Standard admission prices apply to all this summer’s events. A family ticket for up to two adults and three children (aged 5-15) is £47.60. Children under 5 get free admission. English Heritage members get free admission.
