Crystal therapy: making sweet memories in the manatee capital of the world

Last updated 6th October 2025

Crystal River in Florida’s Citrus County is the manatee capital of the world, so Lisa McGarry wasn’t surprised to discover it’s also an amazing family destination and the best Florida holiday.

Floaty potatoes and active adventures in Crystal River

It’s not always easy to tell one end of a manatee from the other, especially underwater. Despite their car-like proportions, the ‘chubby mermaids’ – AKA ‘floaty potatoes’, as seen on t-shirts around town – ascend slowly from munching eelgrass to come up for air, so it takes a little practice to know which end will result in a cute snout popping the surface.

Happily, we’re under the expert tutelage of Salty Siren Tours, who’ve taken us out on their boat in Kings Bay to swim with manatees. And, despite it being outside of the season during our June visit, we quickly strike gold with a group of adults and babies, grab our snorkels and carefully hit the water.

It’s important to stick to the rules of Crystal River: no touching, crowding, or standing when manatees are under you, as the pre-swim tutorial made clear. Manatees are born without aggression or fear due to having no natural predators, so it’s easy to get up close to them and they’re even given to hugging swimmers, although respect for them and their habitat is paramount.

The experience is as magical as you might expect: one swims under me, almost lifting me up, before its sweet face appears next to mine. And just like that, we’ve ticked the number one Crystal River experience off our bucket list, but luckily for us there are plenty more in store.

Discover the best Florida holidays in Crystal River

Crystal River is a laid-back town full of passionate people who are committed to making it a great place to visit, and clearly want you to love it as much as they do. This shone through on a visit to the Crystal River National Wildlife Refuge Visitor Centre with representatives from Save Crystal River.

Dedicated to protecting the threatened Florida manatee, the Save Crystal River team recreate and revive the ecosystem in local waterways by opening spring vents, planting eelgrass, removing detritus by the truckload, and filtering phosphorous and nitrogen elements from the water.

It’s impressive stuff, and seems to be working, but as ever there is always more to be done to help manatees thrive alongside humans.

PaddleTail Lodge is a perfect family base

Local passion also showed during our stay at PaddleTail Lodge, just five minutes’ walk from the town centre and also right on the waterfront.

Rooms here are spacious and modern with huge beds and the swimming pool with river views is perfect for kids. A brand-new tiki bar delivers chilled sundowners and the staff are a delightful mix of helpful and chatty. Plus, there’s plenty of space for younger guests to run around with complete freedom.

Crystal River is lovely, with a surfy vibe from the local paddleboard rental store and gorgeous houses everywhere. It’s great for families too and Hunter Springs Park is a perfect example. Right in the middle of town it comes with a white sand beach on the riverbank, as well as a shallow swimming spot. Crystal River Lighthouse is another local unmissable, as is the manatee town mural.

Active adventures for everyone in your family

I’ve never come home from a trip so fit. We took an e-bike tour with Trek Bicycle Inverness along the Withlacoochee State Trail in Inverness, which totals 46 miles of paved trail through scenic countryside, and after the 14 miles we managed, were serenely exhausted and ready for lunch.

There’s something wonderful about so much wholesome exercise that’s also completely invigorating. Also, knowing we were following in the path of many hikers and bikers before, lent the whole experience extra gravitas. Particularly as the trail is 85 years old, and originated from land acquired by the federal government between 1936 and 1939, which later transitioned to a land-use project for the Withlacoochee State Forest before becoming the trail.

Then there was kayaking with Lena and Scott of Water’s Edge Adventures, who took us out for a morning to spot manatees before heading to Three Sisters Springs. These are the impossibly crystal-clear protected springs where manatees gather in winter, during which time humans are banned. We stopped for a little break at a beach half way up King’s Bay, which was straight out of the Caribbean, complete with palm trees.

Another hearty morning’s exercise, although if you’re feeling up for a challenge, you can book a full day tour, and they also do sunset expeditions. I swapped from paddleboard to kayak half way through (Lena kindly took over my board), because the scenery was so pretty, I wanted the least labour-intensive option. But both are great ways to see the river.

Cruising down the waterways at speed is a zen experience

One of our favourite experiences, and another bucket list tick, was an early evening airboat ride with Ozello Boats. We zoomed along waterways, learned about the local flora and fauna from our knowledgeable guide, and spotted turtles and birds. The perfect blend of excitement and relaxation; zipping along without a care in the world and the breeze in our hair. The best Florida holidays are all about engaging with the incredible scenery and wildlife in the state, and this experience brought it to the fore.

Our guide told us that sharks sometimes come into the estuary area, wooed by the turtles. The thought of hammerheads and tiger sharks cruising along made us a little shy to dip our feet off the boat (you can also swim, should you have a mind to), but the water was so crystal clear that we couldn’t resist. Noisy airboats shouldn’t prompt a zen-like calm, but that’s exactly what happened. And with the noise-reducing headphones, you soon get used to it. Propeller-free boat travel? Clearly the future for manatee protection.

Glorious food on our best Florida holiday in Citrus County

Of course, all this activity required some serious fuel, and from diner plates piled high at Breakfast Station, to an exceptional taco stand in Homosassa, we loved eating in Citrus County. Sunset at Waterfront Social was a highlight, as was catch of the day at KCs Wine Bistro, and the impeccable Bayside Seafood Grille. It’s just as well we did so much exercise, so we could enjoy every bite, and we also spent our last night at Crump’s Landing in Homosassa. Not only was the food great, but this is a perfect spot for families – there’s a pirate playground, wonderful waterfront views, and huge amounts of space for excited kids to run about.

This Florida holiday was the best way we could imagine to get so close to incredible wildlife, enjoy such a range of sporty and outdoor activities, work on our fitness in such a fun way, and eat like our lives depended on it. It actually felt like therapy, especially when combined with all the hospitable locals we met along the way. It’s a big yes from us to Crystal River, and its famous chubby mermaids.
