It’s taken more than four years and a team of over 1000 people, but Alton Towers Resort has finally revealed the launch of its new ride – Wicker Man – an irresistible rollercoaster sure to tempt thrill-seeking families to the theme park in 2018.

The new ride, previously code-named Secret Weapon 8, is due to open at the Staffordshire theme park this spring. It will be the first wooden rollercoaster to be built in the UK in 21 years and the world’s first ever rollercoaster experience to combine wood and fire. The 618 metre long track invites families to reconnect with the primal essence of rollercoasters.

The attraction, which bears the same title as the 1973 thriller film by Christopher Lee, includes a giant, flaming Wicker Man structure that stands at six-storeys high and appears to burst into flames as the wooden train races through his chest three times.

Before entering the Wicker Man, riders will embark on a multi-sensory rite of passage, in which they discover the mysterious world of a shadowy group called The Beornon.

The recently published teaser artwork by world-famous illustrator Kyle Lambert, known for her artistry for Hollywood family films, such as Jurassic Park and Jumanji, hints at the incredible special effects that the new attraction will feature.

The £16 million project has been constructed by a world-class team of experts, led by Great Coasters International, the world’s leading creators of wooden rollercoasters. The latest safety technology has been used, along with rigorous testing and hundreds of hours of training for ride operators.

If you’re a family of adventure-seekers looking for a new rush this spring, head to Alton Towers to experience the primal thrills of Wicker Man.
