Time behind bars turned out surprisingly well for Rochelle Streater on a recent family break in Cornwall at Bodmin Jail Hotel.

Doing time on a family break in Cornwall
The past meets the present on a family break in Cornwall
Our recent family stay at Bodmin Jail Hotel was an unexpectedly delightful journey into history and modern comfort.
Despite its imposing exterior, the jail is impeccably maintained and immediately transports you into a world where the past meets the present in the most charming way.
As soon as we stepped through the doors, we were greeted by a long wing, lined with authentic cell doors, revealing a breathtaking blend of historical details; from the soaring second floor to the snug, carpeted seating areas that soften the contrast with the hard brick walls and steel doors.

Thoughtfully repurposed cells make charming family rooms
I was sharing this family break in Cornwall with my sister and my two daughters, and every moment was designed to captivate both adults and kids alike.
Our room was a thoughtful repurposing of three former cells. One cell now housed a stunning, fully equipped modern bathroom, while the other cells featured a cosy double bed and a comfortable sofa bed.
Despite the contemporary touches, the space retained its character with charming tiny windows, intimate doorways, and arched ceilings. A small plaque commemorating a former inmate added a uniquely poignant touch.

Bodmin ghosts makes for a haunting family break in Cornwall
The experience extended beyond our room. Our daughters were thrilled with their activity packs and animal-shaped towels: a delightful nod to the facility’s playful side.
Dinner in the old jail chapel was nothing short of magical, with high ceilings, mood lighting, and sparkling chandeliers setting a remarkable scene, and the food was just as impressive.
After dinner, we embarked on a tour of the hotel, capped off with a ghost tour that took us deep into the basement. Here the guide regaled us with eerie tales and intriguing history that kept us both entertained and on our toes. Though, despite the spine-tingling stories, our night’s sleep was undisturbed thanks to remarkably comfortable beds.

‘All le cart’, and other prisoner perks
Morning brought an all-you-can-enjoy ‘all le cart’ breakfast that perfectly set the tone for the day.
We then explored the museum next door, featuring an actor-led 4D experience that vividly recounted the jail’s history and the justice system. The immersive journey included details like the occupancy of each cell and even a glimpse of the hanging pit, sparking both wonder and a few playful jumps from our little ones (aged 3 and 8).
For lunch, we enjoyed a casual meal at a delightful pizzeria in the courtyard: a perfect spot to relax with a coffee and a slice of pizza while enjoying some outdoor entertainment.
In every aspect, our family break in Cornwall was a brilliant fusion of history, modernity, and engaging storytelling. Bodmin Jail Hotel is an experience that appeals to both the curious and the young, leaving us eager to return for another extraordinary visit.
