The only thing the UK’s great crop of gorgeous, traditional Christmas markets can’t promise this year is snow. But look on the bright side: less frostiness means more time shopping, eating, drinking and playing. Here’s where’s to start from early November.
For full-on Christmas Market immersion this year, it has to be Manchester. With over 300 stalls, endless festive themes and as much seasonal bonhomie as you can pack comfortably into a city centre, it’s one of the best places to shop, eat, drink and play this year. It doesn’t matter whether you’re buying Bonsai, Provencal soap or locally baked bread, the look is cute and chalet-style, hint of Alpine frostiness and loads of lights, trees and glitter. Santa’s in residence and taking note of kids’ wishes, hog roasts and Berlin bratwurst are just two of the competing culinary greats to try. And the well-signposted market trail makes shopping a lot more fun than usual for kids.
Best for huge variety of stalls, great street-food and kids’ adventuring.
Where: Manchester City Centre.
When: 10 November to 20 December from 10am daily.
