First impressions count at this Marbella luxury family hotel
Our trip to La Zambra was the reward for Dylan working hard at his exams, and we wanted a low-stress journey to make the most of our time away. Plus, visiting a luxury family hotel near Marbella: also a gift for this tired mum.
As La Zambra sits just outside Mijas, around 25 minutes from Málaga Airport, it’s an easy transfer, especially welcome when travelling with kids. Surrounded by golf courses and rolling hills, it feels removed from the bustle of the coast, yet beaches and towns are just a short drive away.
We were instantly wowed by water features, smooth marble and natural furnishings, towering skinny palms, lush greenery, beautiful archways and fountains. Even the lobby smelled like Santal. Staff whisked away our things, brought drinks, and talked us through the layout of the resort like old friends. As a stressed-out single parent, this sparked more joy than a Marie Kondo declutter. La Zambra was once the legendary Byblos Hotel, frequented by celebrities and royalty, before becoming part of the Hyatt Unbound Collection – there’s some serious pedigree here.

Comfortable, stylish and dreamy suites
Suites that look the part and feel like therapy
We stayed in a Junior Golf Suite, blending sophistication and relaxation in one gorgeous space: the kind of room you enter and instantly pinch yourself with glee. Generously sized, beautifully designed, with sunrise and sunset views over the golf course and mountains, bathing us in beautiful, honeyed light.
As you’d expect from a Marbella luxury family hotel, there was more than enough room to spread out, with enough storage for a Kardashian, a fridge and counter area for drinks and snacks, large balcony, and spacious bathroom with two sinks, free-standing bath and a huge shower, little boxes stowing useful essentials in pretty wicker.
Room furnishings were stunning but sturdy, with statement lamps and relaxation beckoning every time we stepped inside. Interconnecting rooms and larger suites are available for bigger families, though we had more than enough space for the two of us. Apparently I now snore: but otherwise, sharing a room was surprisingly harmonious.

La Zambra looks after its young guests but keeps it classy
La Zambra’s kids’ entertainment is as classy as the decor. Younger children are catered for via the club during peak periods, learning everything from Flamenco to golf. You get two hours’ per day included with all stays, and the spa has designated family hours. Outside of this, the surroundings are one giant kids’ club – the frolicking young families we saw being testament to this.
Teens are free to enjoy this Marbella luxury family hotel on their own terms. In Dylan’s case this meant eating his fill of Jamon Ibérico and prime rib, lying supine on sunbeds listening to heavy metal, doing lazy laps of the pool whilst lecturing me like a professor, lifting a few weights in the gym, enjoying the Mood Spa with its hydrotherapy pools and saunas, and pottering around the acres of countryside grounds accompanied by birdsong and mellow views. The best reset for a reluctant city kid.
We also checked out the padel court, and booked a session together. Relaxed and sociable, it’s a great way to do something active without feeling pressured, and a fun way to make friends if you team up.

Mood Spa, La Zambra
Mood Spa is one of the largest on the Costa del Sol
The Mood Spa is a major draw at this Marbella luxury family hotel, a huge wellness space which welcomes kids of 16+ outside of designed family hours. We spent a blissful afternoon in the three pools (cold, warm, and jacuzzi); plus sauna and hammams. The Viking shower – icy, invigorating and dramatic – was a particular hit with Dylan. Whilst he filled his boots (with ice) I had a deep and restorative massage with an incredible therapist, a true holiday treat for my frazzled muscles.
The heated outdoor pool is surrounded by loungers and huge beds, in prime position for chilling out. It’s a lovely novelty to have mountain views, whilst lazily watching tiny golfers hit a birdie. You’re very ‘in the nature’ and it’s supremely relaxing. The family pool is perfect for little kids, but the main pool isn’t deep, and is open year-round. This was our absolute highlight, a true happy place.

Andalusian dining charm at this Marbella luxury family hotel
La Zambra is a Michelin Key-recognised resort, and we loved every bite at its four restaurants. Breakfast at Palmito, included in all room rates, has a vast and generous buffet with a dedicated kids’ corner, with a la carte included. We had some decadent lunches and dinners here, too: it’s a perfect spot for families but still very chic.
Picador is the on-site Andalusian restaurant, serving traditional dishes with exquisite care – it feels like going out-out, with high beamed ceilings and a very cool bar. Bamboleo is the mountain view spot with huge outdoor sofa booths and great poke bowls and pizzas, styled as a retro nod to Byblos origins. There is also poolside La Bartola with its Costa del Sol beach bar vibes.
