The sunny Algarve is always a favourite for quick and easy family holidays, but now Katie Amps has discovered another great reason to go: Marriott Residences Salgado Resort.

Marriott Residences Salgados, Algarve
When I told the kids we were heading to the Algarve for some late summer sun, they were both instantly on board.
My 17 year old, Ella, started scrolling for outfit inspiration and beaches to photograph, while Ronnie, age seven, immediately wanted to know how many pools there would be. Turns out, quite a few.
Our base for the week was the Marriott Residences Salgados Resort which sits within the Salgados Golf Resort complex, about 40 minutes west of Faro Airport. The resort is just inland from the coast, so not a beachfront spot, but that’s part of its charm. Quiet, spacious, and perfectly self-contained, it’s a world of sunshine, good food, and plenty of room to spread out.

Penthouse living at Marriott Residences Salgados
If I could bottle the kids’ faces when we opened the door to our two-bedroom penthouse, I would. The place is enormous, with floor-to-ceiling windows, two sleek bedrooms, a vast living area, and a kitchen that made me briefly think about cooking (I didn’t).
But the real showstopper? The balconies, plural.
One wrapped around the living room with views across the golf course, and another overlooked the pools below. The main balcony was almost the size of the entire apartment, complete with loungers, a dining table, and enough space for Ronnie to practice cartwheels and still have room left over.
We spent most evenings out there, watching the sky fade to pink as the air cooled. Ella lounged with her book and Spotify playlist; Ronnie lined up toy cars along the railing; and I just sat back with a glass of Vinho Verde, thinking, “This is exactly the kind of chaos I love.”

Breakfast buffet, Marriott Residences Salgados
Generous breakfasts sets the tone for the day
We stayed on a half-board basis, and breakfast quickly became a highlight. The buffet was generous – fresh pastries, colourful fruit platters, local cheeses, crispy bacon, and pancakes that Ronnie would have happily lived on.
Ella became a regular at the smoothie station, while I fell head-over-heels for the coffee bar. This wasn’t your standard hotel self-serve – it was a proper barista setup. Perfect espresso, silky cappuccinos, the type of satisfying morning ritual that sets the tone for the day.

Ronnie the pirate, Algarve Marriott Salgados Golf Resort & Spa
Expect plenty of pools at Marriott Residences Salgados
If your idea of heaven involves pool-hopping, this resort delivers.
There are ten outdoor swimming pools dotted across the property, plus a separate children’s pool, so there’s always space to spread out. Each pool had its own energy – from calm, quiet corners to buzzy family zones – and we found a favourite for every mood.
Ronnie, of course, was obsessed with the pirate-ship pool, complete with slides, splash zones, and water cannons. He’d disappear into his own world of swashbuckling adventure while I soaked up the sun from a nearby lounger.
Ella gravitated towards the sleek infinity-style pools, perfect for sunbathing and taking photos she’d later post (with “no filter” captions, naturally).
Because the residences are part of the wider Algarve Marriott Salgados Resort, we also had access to additional pools and facilities at the neighbouring Algarve Marriott Salgados Golf Resort & Spa. A bonus that made it feel like we were staying in an entire resort village rather than a single hotel.

Ronnie, Marriott Residences Salgados, Algarve
This is a resort with a talent for entertaining everyone
Beyond the pools, the resort has a knack for keeping every age entertained.
The kids’ club was a hit with Ronnie: crafts, games, and plenty of new friends. When he wasn’t there, he was racing around the playpark or trying out the outdoor gym, which he treated more like an adventure course than a workout space. Watching him hang from the bars pretending to be a superhero while I sipped iced coffee nearby was one of those unexpected “this is parenting joy” moments.
Ella, meanwhile, joined a spontaneous game on the volleyball court, and suddenly my shy teen was laughing, sun-soaked, and right in the mix. That’s the beauty of this place, it creates connections without forcing them.

Dinner under the stars is the late summer way in the Algarve
Evenings had their own easy rhythm. We’d head to one of the resort’s outdoor restaurants, all glowing with soft lights and warm air, the kind of atmosphere that makes you linger long after dessert.
Half-board dining meant plenty of variety: Mediterranean one night, Asian-inspired the next. One evening it was grilled seabass with roasted vegetables, on another, fragrant chicken curry and perfect rice. The staff were genuinely lovely, greeting the kids by name and remembering Ronnie’s chocolate mousse obsession.
After dinner, we’d wander the palm-lined paths back to the penthouse the air still warm, then we’d pile onto the balcony, feet up, and soak in the peace.

Albufeira, Algarve
Exploring beyond Marriott Residences Salgados
While it’s tempting never to leave, a few short trips made the week even better.
Albufeira is just a 15-minute Uber ride away — perfect for a wander through cobbled streets, a stop for gelato, and a peek at the marina.
If you’re craving a beach day, Salgados Beach is about a ten-minute taxi away and all long golden sand, Atlantic waves, and enough space to set up camp for the afternoon. We also spent a day at Zoomarine, which delivered maximum smiles and minimum screen time.
Travelling with a teenager and a seven-year-old isn’t always straightforward, but here, everything just flowed. Ella had independence, Wi-Fi, and a sun lounger with her name on it. Ronnie had pools, playtime, and endless sunshine. And I had space, real, grown-up space, to breathe.

Goodbye, we wish we could have stayed forever
The Marriott Residences Salgados Resort nails that sweet spot between family-friendly and effortlessly stylish. It’s laid-back but polished, full of life without ever feeling crowded.
It’s the kind of place where you can do everything, or absolutely nothing, and both options feel perfect.
On our last morning, as we loaded our bags into the Uber, Ronnie waved goodbye and asked if we could “stay forever”.
The Marriott Residences Salgados Resort isn’t by the beach, but it doesn’t need to be. With its spacious design, vast balconies, pirate-ship pool, and easy-going family vibe, it’s the kind of place that reminds you what holidays are really about: time together, sunshine, and enough fun to keep everyone happy.
