In just three days at Cascade Wellness Resort in Western Algarve, Katie Amps discovers a combo of football, pretty old towns and spa time makes for magical family holidays.

Cascade Wellness Resort, Lagos, Algarve
Walking up the grand staircase at Cascade Wellness Resort with a teenager on one arm and an excited seven-year-old on the other, I had that rare feeling you get when you know you’ve picked the right hotel for everyone. Sun pouring in through huge windows, a glimpse of Atlantic blue in the distance and Ella whispering, “Okay, this is actually really cool”. It was a strong start for our three-night stay in the Algarve this August.
Cascade Wellness Resort sits on a clifftop just outside Lagos, in Western Algarve, and feels more like a low-rise village than a hotel: terracotta roofs, gardens and sea views everywhere.

Cascade Wellness Resort apartments are great for teens and younger kids
We were staying in a Two-Bedroom Apartment, which turned out to be a game-changer with two kids at different stages. Ronnie could explode his LEGO and football cards in “his” room, while Ella had space to do her own thing.
The apartment was huge and felt more like a stylish holiday home than a hotel room, albeit with housekeeping and fresh towels magically appearing every day.
The extra space made getting ready for dinner less shouty, and with a teen who wants privacy and a seven-year-old who wants to show you everything, that was bliss.

Ronnie, Sandy Bay Pool, Cascade Wellness Resort
Plenty of pool time for my fearless seven year old
In an ideal world, I’d have spent the whole holiday lying by the pool with a book. In reality, I was travelling with a new swimmer who had no fear of the water yet, so most of day one was spent perched on the edge of my sunbed, eyes glued on Ronnie as he launched himself into the pool on repeat.
Then he discovered two things that completely changed our days.
First was the sandpit-style, beachy pool: really shallow with a gently sloping ‘shore’, it instantly became our safe zone. Ronnie could splash, dig and paddle to his heart’s content, and I could finally sit down, sip one of the healthy smoothies from the pool bar (the mango one was a repeat order) and read more than half a page. It felt like the best kind of compromise: he got his “beach”, I got a pocket of downtime.
The second revelation was the grassy area around the pool where, very quickly, holiday kids did what holiday kids do: find each other. Within a day, Ronnie had a gang of new friends and they spent hours kicking a football around, coming back occasionally for snacks, goggles or to tell me the latest match score. Plus, I could keep watch from my sunbed, so he had freedom, but I still felt comfortable.
Add in the sunbed waiter service (so I didn’t have to abandon my post to get drinks) and Cascade suddenly felt like a holy grail: a resort that works for a high-energy kids, and parents in need of a breather. If you can drag them away, the “real” beach at Porto de Mós, is just a stroll down the hill.

Ronnie, Games Room, Cascade Wellness Resort
Cascade Wellness Resort has a genuine focus on football
Cascade is a proper football resort with two top-quality, natural grass pitches on site, and is actually one of the Algarve’s bases for professional football training camps.
Our taxi driver on the way into Lagos casually mentioned that Cristiano Ronaldo had been staying at Cascade with his team for pre-season training just a few days before we arrived. Cue one very heartbroken Ronnie when he realised he’d missed his hero by a matter of days. Quickly followed by the realisation that this was absolute gold for future playground bragging rights.
You can really feel the football pedigree around the resort. In peak season, there are kids’ Football Academies for ages 5–15, and the combo of serious facilities plus family-friendly coaching is a big part of the resort’s appeal.
Ronnie’s other obsession was the indoor football-themed games room. Packed with games and screens, and the walls lined with shirts and memorabilia from teams who’ve trained here, it’s heaven for little superfans. Ronnie loved wandering around pointing out different clubs, before diving back into table football with whichever new best friend was on hand.

Spa, Cascade Wellness Resort
Spa time is just as dreamy as you’d expect from a five-star resort
While the kids argued over who won table football, I snuck off to the spa, which is as dreamy as you’d expect from a five-star resort known as the Wellness Hub Lagos: calm space, tranquil treatment rooms, saunas, hot tubs and a serene indoor pool.
Having a massage here felt less like a holiday extra and more like a necessity, after years of hauling buggies, scooters and overpacked bags. I came out floaty and almost convinced I could become someone who did yoga at sunrise on the cliffs (which you actually can at Cascade Wellness Resort).
However, back in the real world, it just meant I was a much more relaxed referee for the next round of sibling bickering.

Cascade Wellness Resort dining keeps everyone happy
Choosing half-board worked really well for us. Breakfast was the buffet of dreams: fresh fruit, pastries, eggs any way, plus the all-important pancakes for Ronnie. Ella flitted between smoothie bowls and “a bit of everything” in full teen-fashion.
In the evenings, there was a good mix of local dishes – grilled fish, salads and Portuguese desserts – alongside more familiar options to keep younger palates happy. For a three-night stay it was spot on: no stressing about restaurant reservations, but still plenty of choice.
And the joy of wandering back to your huge apartment afterwards, rather than loading tired kids into a taxi, can’t be overstated.

Ronnie & Ella, Lagos Old Town
Lovely Lagos is cool, arty and just a few minutes away
Another great thing about Cascade Wellness Resort is how close it is to Lagos, which has a lovely old town: cobbled streets, whitewashed houses, colourful street art, independent shops and little galleries.
We wandered around in the late afternoon, stopping for gelato, browsing and watching buskers set up in the squares. The marina is lively without feeling rowdy, and you can book boat trips to the caves at Ponta da Piedade, or dolphin-spotting cruises and guided kayaking, if you feel adventurous.
For Ella, Lagos felt like “real Portugal”, somewhere she could take pictures that weren’t just of her brother bombing into the pool. For Ronnie, it was mostly about choosing souvenirs and how many different flavours of ice cream he could try in one holiday.

Our final verdict on Cascade Wellness Resort
After three nights of sea views, smoothies by the pool, football and Lagos, Cascade felt like somewhere we’d happily return.
Ella got her Insta-worthy staircases, sunsets and arty old-town wandering; Ronnie had the games room, football pitches and a beach-style pool, and I had the spa, sunbed service and the joy of everyone being happy in the same place at the same time.
For a family-friendly Algarve break that balances wellness, fun and just the right amount of luxury, Cascade Wellness Resort gets a big tick from all three of us.
