Gouffre de Padirac, Padirac, South West France

One of the most impressive chasms in France, Gouffre de Padirac is 75m deep and contains an eerily beautiful subterranean river which thousands of visitors sail along every year. Add your family to their number and expect the unusual sound of deafening awestruck silence from kids as they voyage 103m underground through the caverns of Europe’s second largest show-cave. Not only are the immense rock formations, walls and organic ceilings weirdly magnificent, the entire Gouffre is hauntingly lit for extra impact. It’s fair to say that even the most nonchalant of teens tends to be impressed, and the experience definitely vies with Lascaux for atmosphere.
