For decades, Butlin’s occupied a very particular corner of the British holiday imagination. It was the first Butlin’s, opened by Billy Butlin in 1936, and still leans hardest into the classic British seaside formula: flashing arcades, fairground rides, beach days and children fuelled almost entirely by sugar. Families who love the nostalgia of traditional bucket-and-spade holidays often prefer it to the more resort-style feel of Bognor Regis.

The resort is also home to the original SKYPARK playground and sits beside Fantasy Island, creating a stretch of Lincolnshire coast dedicated almost entirely to entertaining children. Its newer Maple Walk accommodation offers one of the smarter places to stay for families wanting the traditional Butlin’s atmosphere without some of the older room stock.

The quickest way to transform a Butlin’s holiday is to avoid the cheapest rooms.

At Minehead, the smartest option is West Lakes Village. Built around two landscaped lakes, the chalets feel more like modern holiday lodges than traditional holiday camp accommodation. They come with fully equipped kitchens, dishwashers, outdoor decking and enough space for larger families to spread out.

After a day spent in the Skyline Pavilion, Splash Waterworld and the fairground, returning to a waterside deck creates a welcome sense of separation from the bustle of the resort.

In Bognor Regis, the Wave Hotel apartments are the most luxurious choice for families, with fully equipped kitchens and private balconies looking out to sea. More importantly, you can reach Splash Waterworld in minutes without hauling half your possessions across the resort.

The Shoreline Hotel is closest to the beach and has pirate-themed bunk beds plus a children’s play area that younger guests will love.

At Skegness, the best option is usually Maple Walk, one of the resort’s newer accommodation areas. The apartments and lodges here feel noticeably more modern than some of the older room stock elsewhere on the resort, with brighter interiors and more generous living spaces.

That said, Butlin’s still spans a very wide range of accommodation standards. Book at the budget end and you may find yourself in older apartments with basic bathrooms, thin walls and interiors that prioritise practicality over style.

Are Butlin’s VIP extras worth it?

The biggest shift at Butlin’s over the past few years has been the growth of premium extras. Anyone who has spent time at Butlin’s during the school holidays knows that the most popular shows attract substantial queues.

This is where the Early Access VIP pass comes in. The wristbands give priority entry to the theatres 15 minutes before everyone else, giving you a chance to secure a great table with an excellent view.

The all-inclusive drinks package covers unlimited soft drinks, Costa Coffee from participating machines, beer, wine, spirits and cocktails across the resort.

At Bognor Regis, PLAYXPERIENCE has become one of the resort’s biggest attractions. The escape room is particularly popular with older children, while VR experiences, laser tag and interactive games offer something different from the traditional Butlin’s entertainment.

Minehead has developed premium experiences of its own, including the Darts Academy, high ropes, pottery painting, football coaching, archery and T-shirt design.

All three resorts have also introduced private karaoke pods within their Hot Shots venues, giving families somewhere to belt out their favourite songs away from a public audience.
