Best for: under 12s

This National Trust treasure isn’t new for May half term but it’s a great resource if you’re running short on ideas and just want a fast fix. Try big adventures like ‘floating in a boat’ or just attempt to ‘go barefoot’ for a day. Put your own spin on activities to fit time/energy/space. And know, once they start, kids will want to do all 50 which makes the list a keeper for summer and beyond. Best for: any age

Try Treasure Trails to turn a walk into the best type of adventure for kids. You can follow them pretty much anywhere in the UK (just type in your location to get a trail). And they’re exciting for everyone from grandparents to toddlers – good news if you’re planning a bigger than average family day out this May half term.

3/20 Thames Path – London

Best for: any age (buggy friendly)

The 128km long Thames Path stretches from Richmond to the centre of London along the north and south bank of the river and is walkable or cyclable all the way. It might be a bit of hike in one go for kids, but the path divides neatly into easy sections so you could do some this May half term and keep the rest in your pocket for the summer – or any time really.

Movie nights are fun, but we’re definitely up for celebrating the reopening of UK cinemas this May half-term. Emma Stone is Cruella in this backstory of Disney’s most dastardly dognapper. Best for: age eight and over

From Disney’s Cruella to Alice in Wonderland, May half term is turning out to be big on origin stories this year. Alice: Curiouser and Curiouser at the V&A tracks one of the world’s most famous heroines from Lewis Carrol’s invention to her endless different incarnations over the past 157 years. Expect colour, drama and total immersion from this sensational exhibition.

8/20 Tatton Park – Knutsford, Cheshire

Best for: all ages

It might be most famous for its deer, but this May half term Tatton Park is open for all sorts of other excitement too. Younger kids can meet (and help) Percy the Park Keeper. The annual Scarecrow Festival is on, as well as spring Scavenger Hunts. You can explore the inside of the Mansion again – for the first time in a long time. And if kids just want to run around, Tatton’s 1000 acre parkland is plenty big enough for that.

9/20 Selkie Trail – V&A Dundee

Best for: age three and over

Launching 29 May, the Selkie Trail is free, family-friendly and takes you on a self-guided voyage of discovery around the V&A Dundee. Pick up your trail map at the entrance (you get pencils free too) and then just head off into the wild and wonderful world of Scotland’s stunning design museum.

10/20 The Little Gardener – Kew Gardens

Best for: age three and over

You don’t need an excuse to visit Kew Gardens this May half term, but if you did, The Little Gardener would be perfect. It’s family theatre in the gorgeous glasshouses, runs from 29 May to 6 June and each performance lasts a very kid-friendly 30 minutes. Included in your garden ticket cost, there are four shows every day and, of course, the gardens are open for adventuring around before and after.

11/20 Go Ape – UK wide

Best for: age three and over

Keeper of the tallest treetop adventure courses in the UK, Go Ape is open for May half term. There are 35 locations across the country from Aberdeen to Forest of Dean. And if you’re thinking ‘best for age three, really?’ you may not know that several Go Apes now have Nets Adventure for younger kids, as well as all the truly terrifying aerial stuff for older ones.

12/20 Roam Free – Wakehurst, Haywards Heath

Best for: all ages

This May half term Wakehurst is focusing on mind, body and spirit (with fun in the mix too). Roam Free celebrates a gentle re-entry into the world after the past 12 months and more of restrictions. Families can take the Feel Good Challenge (from yoga to sky watching). First Contact is designed to softly reawaken senses in kids and parents. 13/20 Warwick Castle

Best for: all ages

Since reopening on 12 April, Warwick Castle has been going all out to make up for the fun families have missed over the past year. So expect big things this May half term. Zog and the Quest for the Golden Star is all new thrills. There are towers, walls and ramparts to ramble around as well as the 64-acre gardens and grounds. The UK’s largest bird of prey show is back, so is the Horrible Histories Maze and, as always, there’s plenty medieval pageantry to fill in the gaps.

14/20 Alton Towers – Staffordshire

Best for: all ages

Picking up where New Orleans missed out this year, Alton Towers has Mardi Gras celebrations happening every day right up until 22 June. The new Gangsta Granny ride is open for May half term. There’s CBeebies Land for younger kids. And if you’ve been craving white-knucklers over the past 12 months, Alton Tower legends like Oblivion and Nemesis are ready and waiting for you.

15/20 LEGOLAND Windsor

Best for: ages 12 and under

Mythica opens 29 May 2021 at LEGOLAND Windsor, just in time for half term. It’s billed as a ‘portal into another realm’, includes the UK’s first ever Flying Theatre Ride and if LEGOLAND’s track record in astonishing is anything to go by, you can safely expect great things. Everything else is now open too, plus there are quite a few deals, VIP packages and guided tours for families this half term.

16/20 Cotswolds Wildlife Park and Gardens – Burford

Best for: all ages

If kids want to see eye-to-eye with giraffes Cotswolds Wildlife Park and Gardens is the only place in the UK with a giraffe walkway. Down on the ground the Children’s Farmyard is animal petting heaven for May half term (handwashing stations are all over the place). Plan your visit for penguin and lemur feeding times. And leave at least an hour for kids to thoroughly play-out the outstanding Adventure Playground here.

17/20 Kielder Observatory – Kielder, Northumberland

Best for: ages eight and over

Sitting under one of the darkest dark skies in Europe, Kielder Observatory is a spectacular experience any time of year. Book a visit this half term for kid-friendly events like Space Kids: Rockets and More; Young Explorers; Our Moon; Discovering New Worlds and Introduction to Astronomy.

18/20 Eden Project – Bodelva, Cornwall

Best for: all ages

The Eden Project is another welcome return for May half term, and even if you know it well, you’ll be surprised by how much has changed for 2021. The all new Family Trail focuses on the resilience of plants. There’s live music daily in the Med Biome. The Big Lunch celebrates the Project’s 20th anniversary. And if you’re feeling hungry yourself, you can book a family picnic with your tickets this half term.

19/20 Hidden London – London Transport Museum

Best for: ages 11 and over

Delve down into the deepest, darkest secrets of the Underground on Hidden London walking tours. There are now tours into tunnels, down alleys and up secret streets in Covent Garden, Kingsway, Lincoln’s Inn Fields and Victoria Embankment. As well as the chill-factor and a fascinating insight into the transformation of the city over 200 years, they’re great fun and very kid-friendly.

20/20 National Trust Days Out – UK wide

Best for: all ages

Unusually there are no National Trust events planned for May half term 2021, but that doesn’t stop its properties, gardens, coastlines and wide open spaces still being some of the best places to go play with kids. Almost everywhere is open (including houses, restaurants, shops and playgrounds) and advance booking is essential. Though you shouldn’t have too much trouble finding somewhere with room, as the National Trust currently looks after 250k hectares of land, more than 200 historic houses, 41 castles and chapels and 780 miles of coastline across the UK.
