Glide is back at Battersea Power Station and we’re totally smitten, again

Last updated 19th November 2024

What makes Glide such a sensational London ice rink? It’s Christmassy, the ice is great and, we’re going to have to say, it has Battersea Power Station.

Tis the season to go skating, Glide

Glide is back at Battersea Power Station until 5 January 2025 and it’s as magical as ever, right down to that 30ft Christmas tree and the best London ice rink backdrop, hands down.

Glide is the only London ice rink by the riverside

Unless you go skating year round, it might take you a minute to adjust to ice this smooth. Just take it easy to start with and remember, there is absolutely no shame in leaning a little on your kid who’s bagged the cute penguin skate aid: what are children for if not to prevent parents humiliating themselves?

Once you get the hang of it and start gliding like the swan you know you are, that glass-like ice is heaven: no ugly clumping over ruts at this London ice rink.

If you want to see how it’s done, take a second to observe the Ice Marshalls, not only friendly and not even slightly judgy to the fallen, they can also really skate. We’re not sure if it’s a regular thing, but a couple of figure skaters were pretty impressive too, obviously the main difference is they have their own skates! Under-5s believe this, so feel free to use.

No other London ice rink has a 30-horse vintage carousel

Off the ice, Glide is partnering with Boots this year which means an Elf House packed with shiny, pretty stuff to covet. You might be more inclined to hit the fudge emporium, if you’re in charge of children. And when you need to sit down and refuel, head to The Glass House for food and outlandishly good views – it’s cosy too, which is nice, especially if you go in the evening.

A 30-horse vintage carousel and Helter Skelter are just a couple of distractions that could persuade you off the ice too. Although, this is the only London ice rink with three interconnecting rinks, so it doesn’t take a will of iron to just stick with skating. We’re not saying you won’t have fun on frozen rectangles elsewhere this winter, but once you’ve tried the Glide spread it’s hard not to make comparisons.

Remember to book in advance, and during the day is the best time to go with younger kids. Also, Glide has accessible sessions again this season, when the ice is quieter and music and lighting levels are turned down.
