Why go?
From 23 July to 3 August the eyes of the world will be on Glasgow as it hosts the XX Commonwealth Games. Once a city known for its industrial engineering, the modern Glasgow has re-built itself as one with a thriving creative energy, who’s art scene is a serious business. Alongside the obvious sporting credentials, the city will be hosting Festival 2014, a series of cultural events to coincide with the Games.
Activities
During 2 and 3 August join in with a special weekend of performances of 20 brand new commissions from some of the UK’s most exciting composers, including six Scottish-based composers, supported by New Music Biennial 2014.
There will also be many dazzling theatre performances, from the works of community-based groups to projects, which will take place on multiple international stages. Look out for one of the larger-scale projects, Perch, an ambitious global performance which will be set on many stages positioned high above the streets in three countries: Scotland, Australia and Brazil. This collaboration will combine aerial theatre, street theatre, communities, choirs and orchestras in an impressive spectacle. On top of this, there will be visual art displays and storytelling – and of course not forgetting the Commonwealth Games themselves.
