Switzerland’s iglu village: Iglu Dorf Engelberg

Last updated 24th July 2022

Why go?

It can get cold outside on the mountains above the Swiss ski resort of Engelberg in the depths of winter. But inside the igloo village it’s more than cool – in every sense of the word.

Don’t worry, it’s not freezing, just cosily-cold, especially when you are all wrapped-up with a warm drink in your hand and a sleeping bag – that has been designed to withstand temperatures of -40°C – to look forward to.

The Iglu-Dorf is situated some 1800m above sea level on the slopes of the family-friendly ski resort of Engelberg in the heart of Switzerland.

Accommodation

Explore the hotel or relax in your room before a meal of Gerber cheese fondue, or pasta if you wish. Take a night-time snow-shoe walk around the lake, following a starlit path through the mountains, or you can even enjoy an outdoor jacuzzi.

At bedtime, zip yourself into the snug polar sleeping bags where you will be remarkably warm and comfortable. Wake-up time, with a hot drink, is 7.45am and then it’s off to breakfast at the nearby Alpstubli mountain restaurant.

From there, you can carry on skiing in a resort that is ideal for beginners and intermediates with lovely blue runs and interesting reds, with the occasional black and lots of off-piste options for the more adventurous.
