You only need to visit Seattle with kids once to know you’ll definitely be back. That’s why we were surprised to find The Seattle Times recently asking readers if they thought the city was cheugy (for non Gen Z-ers, that’s out of date or trying too hard). Now Seattle’s probably being falsely modest, but we decided to be serious and put the cheugy-ness through a kid test. Turns out it’s all over fun, effortlessly on point and even kids old enough to worry about being basic still love Seattle as much as ever.
1/9 Space Needle
This iconic spot that makes the Seattle skyline so recognizable is a must for anyone spending time in Seattle. Originally built as the show stopping centerpiece for the 1962 World’s Fair, the Space Needle recently underwent a massive renovation and is now an even better experience for visitors than ever. The all-glass windows and panels allow for incredible 360-degree views of the city. Capture the perfect selfies on their built-in cameras or fearlessly stand on the one-of-a-kind rotating glass floor to get a glimpse straight down more than 500 feet. On you way out, don’t miss the virtual reality bungee jumping experience.
2/9 Chihuly Garden and Glass
Showcasing the work of famed glass artist Dale Chihuly, this colorful indoor and outdoor exhibit located just steps from the Space Needle will wow travelers of all ages with its large-scale, imaginative glass sculptures. You’ll definitely want to stop in the greenhouse to take a photo of the huge red and yellow flowers lining the glass ceiling that frame a view of the Space Needle from below. It’s also a great spot to visit at dusk to see the sculptures in the outdoor gardens lit up. As an added bonus, they also employ professional photographers who will snap a family photo in front of the art for free during your visit.
3/9 Pike Place Market
One of the first things to do when you visit Seattle is head to iconic Pike Place Market. Jostle your way through the crowds to visit the numerous food and craft stalls. Don’t be fooled into thinking the upper level in where the market ends. The massive space continues underground with even more stores and restaurants to explore and there are plenty of quiet secret garden spots to reward tourists who wander off the main paths. Be sure to stop at the fish markets to watch them famously toss around the catch of the day.
4/9 Chihuly Boat House
Just recently opened to visitors, the Chihuly Boat House is an incredible look inside how Chihuly’s glass projects come to life. Watch the team at work as the blow glass into gravity-defying shapes and wander through the space to take in some of the artist’s personal collections. Especially lucky visitors might even get treated to a brief visit from Dale Chihuly himself as he pops in to check in on his latest creations. Be aware that the boat house is a work space with extremely hot and breakable materials so it is not suitable for the youngest travelers.
