Vancouver and Whistler: how to mix it up and keep everyone happy

Last updated 15th December 2024

The best family trips have something for everyone in one (or two) destinations. To that end, Claire Zlobin recently paired Vancouver with Whistler, and here’s how it went.

I find the best family trips keep everyone happy, at one point or another. So after a few years of not having a snow break, we were looking for a city and ski trip combination, and felt pretty confident picking a Vancouver and Whistler duo to meet our ‘something for everyone’ demand.

What your kids will love best on family trips to Vancouver

Vancouver Art Gallery is Western Canada’s largest art museum, and it’s right across from the Fairmont Hotel, which makes it an essential on the best family trips in Vancouver. Not just great for art-loving families, it’s a fascinating cultural insight too thanks to its collection of historical and contemporary art from British Columbia, along with its powerful focus on indigenous artists.

Canada’s largest, Vancouver Aquarium is in Stanley Park, and another must-visit for families. Don’t miss the interactive exhibits, like the Wet Lab, and 4D Theatre Experience. Adorable rescued sea otters and sea lions are a big draw for kids too, and the year round program of family events means there’s something new to see and do practically every time you visit.

Capilano Suspension Bridge Park is one of the true Vancouver icons, and its mix of adventure and nature make it a huge favourite with locals and visitors alike. It can be as rugged as you like – good for teenagers – but attractions like the Treetops Adventure and Cliffwalk are ideal for kids of any age to burn off some energy while enjoying stunning views.

Vancouver views are spectacular, make the most of them

If you want wild fun just 15 minutes from downtown, Grouse Mountain is the place for all that. Although it offers year-round family activities, in winter it’s especially good for snowshoeing and skating, all with amazing views, of course.

FlyOver Canada is an exhilarating simulated flight ride that lets you see Canada’s landscapes without leaving Vancouver. Perfect for older kids, it has a 40” height minimum, you’ll find it at Canada Place.

Take the scenic False Creek Ferries ride over to Granville Island. As well as the famous Public Market, there’s the Kids Market too, and both are known for unique shops, along with delicious treats and a really warm, friendly atmosphere.

Why Whistler is always one of the best family trips all-round

The best family trips to Whistler start with a scenic two-hour shuttle ride through the Coast Mountains. Book a transfer with Whistler Connection, which picks you up at the Fairmont Hotel Vancouver and drops you off at the centrally located Sundial Boutique Hotel.

Intermediate and expert skiers can join free CIBC Mountain guided ski tours hosted by Whistler Blackcomb Mountain Hosts. Explore the slopes with local experts while discovering hidden gems. This is a free program, and even my husband, who is an expert skier, loved the guided mountain experience.

Book full-day ski or snowboard lessons to help kids (and parents) build confidence and progress quickly. Professional instructors tailor lessons to skill levels, making the experience stress-free and enjoyable for families. There is no option of half-day or hourly lessons at Whistler, but we found that the day-long lessons resulted in faster skill progression.

Rent top-of-the-line skis or snowboards at the Salomon Store at the base of Whistler Mountain. This location is near the Sundial. If you are staying at a different ski resort, find the rental option closest to you. There are many to choose from.

Delight in bold flavours at The Mexican Corner. Inspired by Mexico’s culinary history, from street tacos to mole dishes, it’s also known for a vibrant atmosphere and the diverse menu makes it a family favourite.

The Chalet at Fairmont Chateau Whistler is a luxurious and cozy dining experience with delicious alpine-inspired dishes. Complimentary shuttles make it easy to get there from the Sundial Boutique Hotel. Alternatively, stay really cozy and order an OG Box for a relaxed dinner in your suite at the Sundial Boutique Hotel. Featuring artisanal cheeses, meats, and fresh local produce, it could be the perfect end to a snow day for sleepy kids.

How to make sure you make the most of every minute at Whistler

Save time with rentals by picking up your rental gear the night before to avoid morning rushes.

Enrol kids in all-day lessons, which provide a structured environment while giving parents time to explore advanced slopes or relax.

Take advantage of free programs like the CIBC ski tours, they’re an excellent way to explore the mountain without additional costs.

To keep younger kids entertained, balance skiing with non-ski activities like the SLCC, gondola rides, and exploring Whistler Village.

Warm up in the Sundial’s rooftop hot tub with mountain views.

Share stories over snacks at Black’s Pub or enjoy family time with a charcuterie board from Picnic Whistler.
