An Ottawa family city break means outdoor fun for everyone

Ottawa shines in the warmer months, when green spaces, waterfalls, and historic trails invite families to unplug and play. Here are a few of my family’s favourite spots.

Do Hog’s Back Park on Sundays when part of the parkway is closed to vehicles, making it a haven for strollers, bikes, and scooters. Wander scenic trails or take in the stunning view at Hog’s Back Falls, where the Rideau Canal and Rideau River split.

Just a short walk from the park, Hog’s Back Locks are a great place to sit, watch the boats, and enjoy a slower pace.

Alternatively, if you want more drama head to the iconic eight-lock staircase on the Rideau Canal near Parliament Hill. It’s a must-see moment framed by some of the city’s most famous landmarks.

Ottawa has some of Canada’s best Museums for kids, don’t miss them on a family city break

Of course Ottawa  has many of Canada’s top museums, plenty of them with interactive exhibits that are perfect for engaging kids.

The Canadian Museum of Nature is the one for dinosaurs, deep-sea creatures, and hands-on exhibits that keep kids wide-eyed.

Explore aircrafts, helicopters, and rockets that let imaginations soar at the outstanding Canada Aviation and Space Museum in Ottawa.

Canada Agriculture and Food Museum gets kids up close with farm animals, and teaches how food gets to your plate. Or there’s hands-on learning of a different sort at the Canada Science and Technology Museum where vintage trains, quirky sound chambers, and tech through the ages will amaze all ages.

The Canadian Museum of History is beautifully immersive, with a must-visit Children’s Museum inside. And Ottawa Art Gallery is always free and family-friendly, with rotating exhibits and kids’ activities (check their site for any registration requirements).

Where to eat in Ottawa: kid-approved and parent-pleasers

Ottawa is one of Canada’s great food cities (birthplace of legendary beavertail pastries no less). Also, it’s a great place to eat with kids.

Try The Grand Pizzeria for wood-fired pizzas and a lively patio atmosphere. We can highly recommend starting the day at the Fairmont Château Laurier breakfast buffet: literally something for everyone.

Or hit Play, Food & Wine for small plates and big flavour. This one’s in ByWard Market, and it works for a date night, as well as a quick bite.

Metropolitain Brasserie delivers French-inspired cuisine with a family-friendly twist. And if you’re in search of sheer comfort, King Eddy’s is all about comfort food classics, casual vibes and famous fried chicken.

Le Nordik Spa, Chelsea, Quebec

Fit some grown up time into your Ottawa family city break

If you can carve out some adult-only time, Le Nordik Spa-Nature in Chelsea, Quebec, is worth the short drive.

It’s the largest spa of its kind in North America, and offers thermal baths, saunas, steam rooms, and quiet rest areas all nestled in nature.

We can highly recommend a couples massage, followed by a relax in the infinity pool overlooking Gatineau Park. Alternatively, you could simply sip herbal tea in peaceful hammocks.

Also, Le Nordik Spa bistro and wine bar serves nourishing meals and local drinks to complete your experience.

Whether you’re staying a few hours or a full day, this spa retreat is a great way to recharge, and give you more energy for family time.
