Swallows & Amazons

This right-rollicking boys’- (and girls’-) own adventure, set in the 1935 Lake District, oozes nostalgia and reveals the timeless splendour of its setting. Arthur Ransome’s treasured classic is handsomely brought to life by British filmmaker Philippa Lowthorpe, successfully adding in another layer of Russian spy plot and cleverly juxtaposing kids’ adventures with the adult world. It also reminds us of a bygone era when kids were allowed to roam free. A must-see film for summer.

Ghostbusters

Thirty years after the original film took the world by storm, Ghostbusters is back and rebooted for the new generation. Parents who loved it first time round won’t be disappointed – the new team are a sassy all-female bunch, who provide plenty of belly-laughs as they try to rid New York of ghosts and ghouls. Kids will enjoy this supernatural comedy, played out by the likes of Kristen Wiig and Melissa McCarthy, and adults will enjoy a trip down memory lane. Who you gonna call…?
