Affordable Adventures in the UK

Last updated 3rd January 2017

Aaron Millar gives the scoop on adventure holidays in the UK that won’t break the bank.

There are plenty of adventurous opportunities for families around the UK for holiday. Where are the best active family holidays on a budget?

A:

The true spirit of adventure is about embracing the unknown, wherever that may be — from the local hill you haven’t yet climbed to the highest mountain in the world. Some of the wildest family holidays I’ve ever been on have been here in the UK, including taking my nine-month-old son to the top of Helvellyn. Here are a couple of trips you might like: celebrate the 450th anniversary of the great bard in 2014 by walking part of the 146-mile Shakespeare’s Way. Travel from his hometown of Stratford-upon-Avon to the Globe Theatre in London, staying at child-friendly B&Bs and hand-picked inns along the way (check out celtic-trails.com). Or, for more of a thrill, canoe around Scotland’s greatest rivers and lochs with Wilderness Scotland (wildernessscotland.com). Highlights include exploring Loch Ness and a thrilling descent of the River Spey in the Cairngorms. Check into cosy B&Bs each night to refuel.
