A happy baby makes for a happier flight

So you’re flying with a baby. First of all, you’re brave. Second of all: you’ve got this.

We’ve rounded up some family travel hacks seasoned parents swear by, from booking the right seat to what actually matters in your carry-on. Because when you’re flying with a baby, preparation is the difference between chaos and calm (well, calm-ish).

Pre-flight prep: Book smarter, not just earlier

You might’ve once been a “last-minute deal” kind of traveller. Not anymore. When you’re flying with a baby, your booking strategy becomes tactical warfare.

Choose flights around your baby’s nap or sleep window (even red-eyes, if your baby sleeps well in a carrier). Always call the airline to request a bassinet seat: these go fast and are often first-come, first-served. Some airlines allow you to bring a car seat on board if you purchase a separate seat for your infant, which can be a game-changer for long hauls.

Before you check in, download the airline’s app. It’ll save you from juggling paper boarding passes while trying to change a nappy mid-delay. And don’t forget to check their policies on stroller gate-checking and baby baggage allowances: you might get to bring more than you think.

Pack for a peaceful flight, top family travel hacks

Family travel hacks for packing a carry-on like a seasoned parent

Your carry-on is now a survival kit. Pack smart, not heavy. Essentials include:

  • Diapers (more than you think you’ll need)
  • Two full changes of clothes for the baby, one for you
  • Wet wipes and dry wipes
  • Portable change mat
  • Milk/formula/snacks depending on age
  • Dummy or pacifier (plus a backup)
  • Swaddle or sleep sack
  • Favourite small toy or book
  • Ziplock bags for soiled clothes or surprise spills
  • Lightweight blanket

Pro tip: Dress baby in layers. Cabin temperatures are unpredictable, and spit-up is always a wildcard.

Make the airport easier on yourself

Security & boarding without meltdowns

Here’s where you ditch the stroller and wear the baby. A carrier keeps your hands free and your baby snug through security queues. For those bringing strollers, gate-checking is a must: just make sure it folds compactly and is tagged at check-in.

A bored, overstimulated baby at the gate isn’t doing anyone any favours.

Feed during take-off and landing (breast, bottle or pacifier) to reduce ear pressure and keep baby comforted.

Recreate your routine on board, family travel hacks

In-flight family travel hacks for keeping your cool

Once onboard, embrace flexibility. Recreate parts of your bedtime routine: feed, story, lullaby, swaddle—anything familiar helps. Walk the aisles when they fuss, and if you’re comfortable, don’t be afraid to ask flight attendants for help (extra water, heating bottles, a quiet corner). They’re often more understanding than you’d expect.

And yes, your baby might cry. That’s OK. You’re doing your best. Most passengers either get it, tune it out, or are too busy dealing with their own neck cramps to notice. You’re allowed to take up space, even with a squishy, loud travel buddy.

Post-flight: The last hurdle

Once you land, the chaos isn’t quite over. Use a carrier while waiting for the stroller at the gate. A quick nappy change before deplaning saves you scrambling later. If you’re doing immigration or a long walk to baggage claim, let baby stretch somewhere clean(ish). And make sure your airport transfer is sorted: there’s nothing worse than juggling suitcases and a jetlagged baby while searching for a taxi queue.

Flying with a baby isn’t easy, but it’s absolutely doable. And often, it’s not the horror story people make it out to be. With the right prep, a sense of humour, and a well-packed bag, you might just find that your little one is a better flyer than half the adults onboard. Bonus: you now officially qualify for Parent Ninja status.
