There are stories to hear everywhere on Rhodes family holidays, but the best myths and legends are the ones you can still touch today. Here’s where to find them all over the island.

The sun-drenched west coast of Rhodes

Why the sun always shines on Rhodes family holidays

It’s not just amazing weather that links Rhodes to the sun. According to legend, long before beach days were a thing, Helios the Ancient Greek Sun God missed out when the world was being divided up by Zeus: Helios, the sun god, was travelling round earth at the time.

Understandably, he was pretty furious at missing out on the land grab, but Helios didn’t take Zeus up on his offer to re-draw the divisions. Instead he demanded ownership of a new island he’d seen rising from the sea, pristine and shimmering. You guessed it, that island was Rhodes and the Helios’ myth is one reason sun worship abounded here for millennia, and why Helios is considered to be the island’s protector to this day.

Need proof of the sun god’s blessings on Rhodes family holidays? Try about 3,000 hours of sunshine each year, and average temperatures of 20° to 30° between April and November.

The legend of how the island of Rhodes got its name

Sticking with Helios, he’s also the source of Rhodes name.

Apparently he fell madly in love with a sea nymph called Rhodos, who also happened to be Poseidon’s daughter, and as a token of his devotion he dedicated the most beautiful island in the world to her. Clearly impressed, she and Helios when on to have several children, known as Heliadae: mythology claims they’re the founders of Rhodian civilisation.

Of course, there are many other reasons why Rhodes is thought to be one of the most romantic Greek islands – see you and raise you Santorini – but nothing beats its origin story.

Harbour, Rhodes Town

Separate the Colossus of Rhodes’ fact from fiction

The legend of the Colossus of Rhodes is probably the best known Greek myth associated with the island.

The fictional tale has the mighty statue straddling Rhodes Harbour for centuries, guarding against seafaring enemies.

The facts are a little less dramatic. The statue of Helios was truly enormous (30m tall) and built about 280BCE. But it didn’t guard the harbour, and it was destroyed by an earthquake only 50 years after it was first erected.

Here, legend jumps in again, as it’s said an oracle warned the islanders not to rebuild the statue or Rhodes would fall. But, if you want to do some treasure hunting, it’s also claimed the bronze remains of the statue hold mystical powers, and they’ve never been fully recovered.

Don’t miss Lindos Acropolis on Rhodes family holidays

Where to go treasure hunting on Rhodes family holidays

In 1522 the Ottoman laid siege to Rhodes overthrowing the Knights Templar and forcing them to flee the island. But, before their hasty retreat, the story goes that they hid their enormous treasure trove of gold and relics in secret caves. To further amplify the aura of intrigue that surrounds this mysterious Order, only a few Knights knew the hiding places, and the secret is supposedly passed down through generations, to this day.

Believe this, or not, it’s a great excuse to do some sailing on Rhodes family holidays. If you’re inspired, some of the easiest caves to see are the ones around Lindos Acropolis, where they indent the cliffs for miles along the coastline. It takes quite a keen eye to spot them, as they’re known for their narrow entrances leading to deep chambers. Perfect for stowing your loot some would say.

Lindos Princess Beach Resort & Spa is perfect for active kids

The Valley of the Butterflies in September, Rhodes family holidays

Do not disturb the butterflies

Every year, between June and September, the Valley of the Butterflies in northeast Rhodes fills with 1000’s of Panaxia butterflies (hence the name). This is the only place in the world where you can experience the phenomenon and it’s as captivating as it sounds.

No surprise that it is also a source of a few folk tales, chief amongst them tells of the spirits of ancient warriors returning to the island of their birth each year in butterfly form. The spirits are also said to be angered by loud noise and prone to disrupting the weather if disturbed. A fun mythical add-on that ties in neatly with the request for quiet in the Valley, which persists to this day.

Why visit Kallithea Springs on Rhodes family holidays

You don’t need a reason to visit pretty Kallithea beach on Rhodes family holidays, but if you did, the story of the Kallithea Springs is a good one.

The little domed building surrounded by mosaics is lovely and relatively new (20th century), but the real mythical beauty here lies in the legendary powers of the waters themselves. Since ancient times it was believed that the springs were a sacred link between the people of the island and the earth, and could cure a multitude of ailments – right down to just feeling a bit worn out.

Though you can’t ‘take the waters’ today, the sea round the springs is famously clear and sheltered for swimming, there are also regular art exhibitions in the gallery and, if you just want to add yet another great beach to your holiday, this is the place for that too.

Where to find a Titan on Rhodes family holidays

When you feel like a little climbing in Rhodes, you can mix your myths with some legwork on Filerimos Hill in the northeast.

But, to get the full mythical drama before you head up, take a look at the hill from a distance. It’s said to resemble a sleeping giant which the ancients believed was a Titan charged with the task of protecting Rhodes, and who would only awaken if the island was in grave danger.

Apart from the prospect of getting up close to a Titan, a climb up Filerimos also rewards you with ancient ruins and a monastery at the top, as well as some spectacular views.

Semi-Submarine: made for family holidays with teenagers

Anthony Quinn Bay is one of the most famous beaches in Rhodes, because it’s unbelievably good looking. Beauty aside, it’s also one of the best places for snorkelling, especially with older kids. So put it on your list, but go early to bag a spot on the shore, this is not a huge beach and it’s very popular.

Heading underwater without getting wet might be more your teens’ vibe, in which case book a cruise on Faliraki Sealines Semi-Submarine. Cruises last for three hours and visit Anthony Quinn Bay as well as several other gorgeous beaches. And if you want to mix it up, they also provide snorkelling equipment and build time into your trip for swimming too. Good to know this is one of the few ways you can see the astonishing Ladiko subterranean cliffs.

Street of the Knights: a heroic stroll to take with teenagers

Once you’ve hit the VR version of Rhodes’ history, teens will be more than happy to explore the real thing and the Street of the Knights in Rhodes Town is a great place to start.

Just 600m long, it’s not too demanding, but take your time, and this isn’t one for staring at phones while you walk. A lot of the action is going on above your head, so eyes off screens and look at the amazing carvings is the rule here. Doors big enough to drive a horse and carriage through are very distracting too, and the lovely covered bridge spanning the street is the one for reels.

Palace of the Grand Master of the Knights

Also in Rhodes Town, the Palace of the Grand Master of the Knights is another must-do with older kids.  Originally built as a Byzantine citadel in the 7th century on the site of a temple to the sun god Helios, its tales of power and intrigue are irresistible.

The Palace collection includes authentic medieval costume, armour and enormous swords: enviable upper body strength was clearly a thing back in the day. Design-conscious teens will be interested to know that the building is one of very few examples of Gothic architecture in Greece. But for the whole story, take the self-guided audio tour and get ready to be fascinated for at least 90-minutes.

Where to go shopping on family holidays with teenagers

The combo of original design and reasonable prices makes Rhodes shopping heaven for teenagers. Unfailingly friendly and helpful, shop assistants are only too happy to let you take your time and jump at the chance to practice their English, so don’t be shy about asking for advice.

The heart of the historic Rhodes Town is awash with cute one-of-a-kind stores, but it’s not the only place to shop. Lovely Lindos is another source of must haves, starting with temptation-laden Acropolis Street where you can wander happily for an indefinite amount of time wooed by everything from pretty pottery to handcrafted soaps: also a good place to take a coffee break. Village Centre Street is the place for small art galleries and indie boutiques selling cool, beachy clothes. And don’t go without strolling down quaint Kori Lindos to pick up unusual gifts and take a peek into the local artist’s studios.

Archaeological Museum of Rhodes:

Even in Greece, the land of grand museums, Archaeological Museum of Rhodes edges out on impressive thanks to its digs in the medieval Hospital of the Knights in the old town.

As well as having an enviable address, the collection here stretches way back to the island’s prehistoric era and pays tribute to small domestic details alongside its major finds.

Expect to be wowed by the statues, mosaics and incredible ceramics. But we’re thinking teens might like  the reconstructed 1630BCE burial site, which originally entombed a knight, and his horse. Good to know that the museum café is often one of the least busy spots in the old town to grab a cool drink and some shade.

Windsurfing, Prasonisi Beach, Rhodes

Where to find the best water sports for teenagers in Rhodes

Name any water sport and there’s a good chance Rhodes can deliver, making it the perfect Greek island for family holidays with teenagers.

Beaches like legendary Prasonisi in the far south are world famous for windsurfing and kite surfing – and you can hire equipment and take lessons there too. But if you’re looking for a broader mix, barely any beaches on the island are better than Kiotari in the southwest.

Anything from kayaking to wakeboarding is up for grabs here, it’s also a great place to hire a boat for the day: sailing round Rhodes is a magical experience. Fun stuff that doesn’t take any effort includes banana boats and ringos, as well as sliders and pedalos. Or you can just pick up a paddleboard for an hour and enjoy the famously calm waters of Kiotari Bay.

Acropolis of Lindos: the Rhodes’ must-do on family holidays with teenagers

Rhodes is known for authentic villages, and teens who like a walk, will love hiking round them in spring or autumn: well marked routes are another island speciality.

In summer when you want shaded streets, cafés and beaches with your village tours, visit Lindos on the southwest coast.

Possibly one of the most iconic Rhodes’ villages, thanks to the Acropolis of Lindos, it will also win your heart with its whitewashed houses and little cobbled lanes. Summer might not be hiking weather, but make an exception for the Acropolis. It’s a total of 300 steps, which is very doable if you take it easy, remember to wear hats and don’t forget the sun screen.

Valley of the Butterflies: the summer phenomenon you have to see

Rhodes is home to one of the worlds most spectacular natural phenomenon and if you visit in summer, it’s a must-see for nature loving teens.

Between June and September every year, 1,000s upon 1,000s of Panaxia butterflies hatch in the Valley of the Butterflies in the northeast of the island. The valley is a fairy tale of a place all by itself, but the addition of clouds of colourful, fluttering wings is totally enchanting.

Sunset horse riding: the perfect beach experience for teens

Even with no equestrian experience you can ride along the beach in Rhodes at sunset. Although children as young as six are welcome, this is one that older kids and teenagers will definitely appreciate most. The riding tours are small and friendly, you’re matched to a horse that suits your confidence and the stables are in the village of Monolithos in the south of Rhodes. Obviously sunset on the beach is the biggest deal, but the two hour tour also takes you through some of the island’s loveliest countryside, as well as ancient olive groves and woodland, so it’s a great way to see parts of Rhodes that are a little off the beaten track.

Agia Agathi, east Rhodes

Agia Agathi: the castaway beach for lazy days in the sun

Almost hidden away, Agia Agathi has all the feel of a secret beach without any of the effort. It’s only 20 minutes north of Lindos, and closer still to the village of Charaki. Sensational good looks are a big part of its appeal, but families with younger kids will like the calm, shallow seas here, as well as the soft, golden sand.

This one is a favourite with local families, and that’s the best recommendation.

Where: about 15km north of Lindos and 4km from Charaki for shops and tavernas

Family friendly: best for younger kids and pre-schoolers, not much for teens

Beach facilities: sunbed hire, toilets, beach bar

prasonisi-best-rhodes-family-beaches

Prasonisi, best Rhodes family beaches

Prasonisi: one of the best Rhodes family beaches for views

Not just one of the most best Rhodes family beaches, Prasonisi easily competes with many of the greatest beaches in Greece. It’s an isthmus of sand that’s revealed at low tide, but things here get really phenomenal when you realise that Prasonisi’s golden sands are a meeting point for the Aegean and Mediterranean: one of the reasons it’s a photographer’s favourite.

The dynamic nature of Prasonisi also means the waters are famously clear, add that to its position on the southerly tip of Rhodes, and you know why it’s a magnet for wind sport lovers. Always fun to watch even if you don’t wind or kite surf yourself, but should you want to give it a go, equipment hire and lessons are available.

Where: about 8km south of Kattavia village for tavernas and cafés

Family friendly: good for all ages, just remember to bring shade for younger kids

Beach facilities: there are few facilities for families here, so come prepared

lardos-best-rhodes-family-beaches

Lardos Beach, Rhodes

Lardos Beach: one of the best Rhodes family beaches for younger kids

Set on the sheltered southeast coast of Rhodes, Lardos Beach gives you that classic Greek combination of incredible scenery and lots of space to yourself. We also like its natural charm: low on development and big on beauty. A mix of sand and pebbles make the shoreline easy under kids’ feet and there’s a gentle entry into the sea here too, so it’s perfect for first time paddlers.

The beach might be happily left to nature, but  it also has a Blue Flag which means you’ll find good facilities here. There’s also a beach bar and water sports are available too. If you want more, the nearby village of Lardos comes good on family-run tavernas and friendly cafés, along with pretty, whitewashed houses to admire.

Where: about 2.5km south of Lardos village and 8km west of Lindos village.

Family friendly: good for all ages with water sports for older kids and shallow seas for pre-schoolers

No round up of Rhode’s best beaches is complete without a mention of Anthony Quinn Bay. On an island with over 50 beaches, the majority of which fly a Blue Flag, Anthony Quinn is generally considered to be one of the loveliest of all.

It’s a small cove, sheltered by golden cliffs, and much loved by snorkellers. If you’re up for a bit more exercise, it’s also a great beach to visit on a kayaking tour, which also means you don’t need to think about parking in summer when it’s tricky to find nearby.

Where: about 20km south of Rhodes Town and 3km south of Faliraki for shops and restaurants

Family friendly: best for tweens and teens who like to get underwater

Beach facilities: small beach bar, sunbeds for hire and toilet facilities nearby

tsambika-beach

Tsambika Beach, Rhodes

Tsambika Beach: the beach families love best in Rhodes

Possibly the best loved of all Rhodes family beaches, Tsambika sits between Lindos and Falariki, again on the sheltered east coast.

Long, with soft sands and clean, clear water, the beach might be popular but it never feels over-busy and you’ll always find space to spread out and play – it’s great sandcastle building territory.

Shallow seas for quite a distance are great for families with younger kids or nervous swimmers. A little playground is also a big hit with pre-schoolers. Although access to water sports mean teenagers will be just as happy here. Also, it’s very easy to get to from the road, and there’s parking.

Where: about 4km south of Kolimpia for shops, cafés and family restaurants

Family friendly: great for all ages from sandcastle builders to teenagers

Beach facilities: beach bars and cafés, toilets, showers, water sports and sunbed rental

Naturally, the backdrop of mountains add to that sense of exclusivity and nearby Kiotari village is known for good restaurants with gorgeous sea views.

By complete contrast to the beaches in the southeast, this northwest beauty has lots going on, and works really well for older kids. It’s one of the best Rhodes family beaches for water sports, particularly the wind-driven type, and there are several places that provide equipment hire and lessons.

That said, because Ixia is really a series of smaller, linked beaches you’ll always find a quiet spot that isn’t thronging with people, so younger kids will feel comfortable here too. Sustainable travel is something we’re all thinking about more and more. Happily, Sentosa has been putting that thought into action for quite some time. So much so, that it’s now Asia’s first island destination to be certified sustainable. Although, don’t imagine environmental responsibility looks, sounds or feels in the slightest bit dull.

sentosa-sustainable-travel-island-beach-singapore

Asia’s first island destination to be certified sustainable

What sustainable travel means to Sentosa

As Asia’s first island destination to be certified sustainable, Sentosa had to satisfy the stringent Global Sustainable Tourism Council Destination Criteria (GSTC-D) covering Sustainable Management, Socio-economic, Cultural and Environmental Sustainability. The gold standard for sustainable tourism, GSTC-D has exacting standards, and to date, only 23 destinations worldwide have been GSTC-D certified. So Sentosa now belongs to the same elite group as icons like Vail in Colorado and Iceland’s Snæfellnes Peninsula.

But it’s also a place of rare and singular loveliness, has sights like nowhere else and aims to keep its beauty intact and its green credentials growing. In fact, one of the island’s main sustainability goals is to achieve carbon neutrality by 2023. To that end, plans are already underway to power at least 10% of its electricity needs from renewable sources and also become a zero-waste destination. Indeed, with innovative waste-to-energy systems playing a major role, it’s predicted that sufficient renewable energy will be produced by 2030 to offset the emissions of 300K hotel rooms each year.

Although we predict kids may be a bit more interested in the day-to-day adventure that co-exists with sustainable travel practices all over Sentosa.

It’s a well-signposted trail and in addition to real birds, there are outsize wildlife models dotted along its length too. Walk about or catch some green public transport

Of course walking is the most eco-friendly mode of transport out, and Sentosa is a glorious place to put that to the test. However, hiking about with younger kids isn’t always a plan, so you’ll be soothed to know that Sentosa’s fleet of beach shuttle has been fully electric since 2020.
