If the arrival of autumn has you already missing summer, there’s a compelling case for squeezing in one last dose of Greek sunshine. Rhodes in October can still mean days on the beach, swimming in the sea and eating dinner outside – but without the intense heat and crowds of July and August.

For families tied to school holidays, that makes Rhodes an especially tempting option for October half term. Average daytime highs sit around 24°C across the month, while the sea temperature is typically around 22-23°C. There’s a greater chance of rain than during summer and temperatures fall towards the end of the month, but you could still be swapping coats and grey skies at home for T-shirts and sunshine.

There’s another advantage too: cooler temperatures make exploring Rhodes considerably more appealing with children, whether you want to climb to the Acropolis of Lindos, wander through Rhodes Old Town or discover the island’s quieter natural side.

So, is Rhodes good in October? Here’s what families need to know before booking an October half-term holiday – plus some of the best places to stay with H Hotels Collection, a family-run Greek hotel group with seven resorts across Rhodes.

Is Rhodes good for October half term?

Rhodes is one of the more appealing Greek islands for a late-season family holiday. Its southerly position in the Aegean helps it hold onto warmer weather into autumn and October is still part of the island’s tourist season.

It also offers something that becomes increasingly important when the weather isn’t guaranteed: plenty to do beyond the beach.

Rhodes Old Town, the Acropolis of Lindos, ancient Kamiros, the Valley of the Butterflies and Seven Springs all provide alternatives to spending every day beside the pool. In fact, sightseeing can be considerably more comfortable in October than during the hottest summer months.

Families also get to experience the island when it’s quieter. The atmosphere is different from peak summer, with fewer crowds at major attractions and less competition for that coveted spot beside the pool.

What is the weather like in Rhodes in October?

The big question for any October half-term holiday is inevitably: will it be warm?

Historically, Rhodes has an average October high of around 24°C and an average temperature of roughly 21°C. Sea temperatures average around 22-23°C and Rhodes Town typically sees around eight hours of sunshine a day.

However, October isn’t August and families should arrive with realistic expectations. Rain becomes more likely, evenings are cooler and temperatures tend to drop as the month progresses. Late October can therefore feel noticeably different from the beginning of the month.

The payoff is weather that’s often far more comfortable for active families. Rather than organising your day around escaping the midday heat, October can be a great time for walking, exploring archaeological sites and spending longer in Rhodes’ towns and villages.

h hotels family beach rhodes

The payoff is weather that’s often far more comfortable for active families.

Is Rhodes hot enough in October?

For many families, yes. Temperatures in the low-to-mid 20s can still be warm enough for shorts, T-shirts and afternoons by the pool, particularly when the sun is out.

What you shouldn’t expect is guaranteed scorching summer weather. October is shoulder season and conditions can vary from year to year and even from one day to the next.

That makes choosing your hotel more important. A family resort with plenty of activities, restaurants and entertainment gives you options if you wake up to a cooler or cloudier day.

Can you swim in Rhodes in October?

Don’t pack away the swimsuits just yet. Average sea temperatures remain around 22-23°C in October, so swimming is still possible for families who don’t mind slightly fresher water.

The sea also cools more slowly than the air after summer, which is one reason an October beach holiday in Rhodes can still work.

Hotel pools are a different matter. Unheated outdoor pools can feel chilly later in the season, so families for whom daily swimming is non-negotiable should check the facilities at their chosen resort before booking.

Does Rhodes close down in October?

Rhodes does become quieter as October progresses, but the island doesn’t simply shut its doors when September ends.

Rhodes Town has a substantial year-round population and major sights remain an option outside peak summer. Lindos also continues to attract visitors in autumn, although some seasonal businesses elsewhere on the island may reduce their hours or close as the tourist season draws to an end.

The final week of October is particularly close to the traditional end of the summer season, so don’t assume every beach bar, restaurant or excursion will operate exactly as it does in August.

Staying at a larger resort can make this less of an issue, particularly for families. Restaurants, entertainment and activities on your doorstep mean your holiday isn’t dependent on everything nearby remaining open.

Is Rhodes cheaper in October?

Travelling outside the peak July and August school holidays can open up better-value options, although October half term itself is still a popular school-holiday period.

There are some additional costs families need to remember. Greece charges a Climate Crisis Resilience Fee on hotel stays. From April to October, this costs €10 per room, per night at four-star hotels and €15 at five-star hotels, so families staying seven nights at a five-star resort should budget an additional €105 per room.

Factor the charge into your holiday budget rather than being surprised by it at check-out.

Things to do in Rhodes in October with kids

One of the strongest arguments for choosing Rhodes for October half term is how much there is to do away from the beach. Start with Rhodes Old Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site surrounded by imposing medieval walls. Children can explore the cobbled Street of the Knights and Palace of the Grand Master, while older kids and teenagers may appreciate the island’s rather dramatic history involving ancient Greeks, Romans, crusading knights and Ottomans.

Further south, Lindos combines one of Rhodes’ prettiest villages with the hilltop Acropolis of Lindos. The climb is much more appealing without the full force of the summer sun and the views across the coastline are worth the effort.

October is also a good time to explore the island’s natural landscapes. Seven Springs offers woodland walks and freshwater springs, while families can head inland to discover traditional villages, hiking trails and viewpoints.

It’s a useful reminder that an October holiday in Rhodes doesn’t need to depend entirely on beach weather.

What to pack for Rhodes in October

Packing for Rhodes in October requires a little more planning than a midsummer holiday. Bring the usual swimwear, suncream, hats and lighter clothes for warmer days, but add layers for the evenings. A jumper or light jacket is useful after sunset and comfortable trainers are worth packing if you’re planning to explore Rhodes Old Town, Lindos or the island’s walking trails.

A lightweight waterproof is sensible too. Hopefully it stays firmly at the bottom of the suitcase, but this is autumn and a little flexibility goes a long way.

So, is Rhodes worth visiting in October?

If you’re looking for guaranteed blazing sunshine, October will always involve more of a gamble than July or August. But that’s not really the point.

Rhodes in October offers families the possibility of late-season sunshine and sea swimming alongside cooler sightseeing weather, fewer peak-season crowds and resorts designed to keep children entertained regardless of what the weather decides to do.

For October half term in particular, it hits a useful middle ground: warm enough to feel like you’ve escaped autumn but interesting enough that the success of the holiday doesn’t depend on seven uninterrupted days beside the pool.

And when the alternative is probably digging out the winter coats at home, one last family trip to the Greek sunshine suddenly sounds very appealing.

Think Rhodes and you’re probably picturing golden beaches, whitewashed villages and the UNESCO-listed Medieval Old Town. But beyond the coastline lies another side to the island that many visitors never experience.

From butterfly-filled valleys and freshwater springs to mountain trails and pine forests, Rhodes is one of the Aegean’s most diverse natural destinations.

Whether you’re travelling with young children, teenagers or simply want a break from the beach, these seven outdoor adventures reveal why Rhodes deserves more than a fly-and-flop holiday – and why an H Hotels Collection stay is the ideal base for exploring it all.

Why explore beyond Rhodes’ beaches?

While Rhodes is one of Greece’s best-loved beach destinations, around two-thirds of the island is covered by hills, forests and protected natural landscapes. Inland, you’ll find shaded walking trails, freshwater springs, traditional villages and spectacular viewpoints that offer a completely different perspective on the island.

Exploring beyond the resorts is also a great way to escape the busiest beaches during peak summer while discovering a more authentic side of Rhodes.

You’ll find spectacular viewpoints across the island

7 nature spots you won’t want to miss

1. Visit the Valley of the Butterflies

One of the island’s most famous natural attractions, the Valley of the Butterflies (Petaloudes) transforms each summer as thousands of Jersey tiger moths gather among cool woodland, streams and shaded pathways.

Families can stroll along wooden bridges, admire waterfalls and climb towards the historic Monastery of Panagia Kalopetra, where panoramic views reward the uphill walk.

It’s one of the most peaceful places on Rhodes and ideal for a morning excursion before temperatures rise.

2. Discover Seven Springs (Epta Piges)

Hidden beneath a canopy of pine trees, Seven Springs is one of Rhodes’ best-kept secrets.

Freshwater springs feed a tranquil lake surrounded by woodland, while walking trails weave through the forest. Adventurous visitors can even walk through the famous narrow tunnel leading to the lake – a memorable experience that’s become something of a Rhodes tradition.

The cooler temperatures make this one of the island’s best nature escapes during summer.

3. Go horse riding through the Rhodian countryside

Horse riding offers a unique way to discover Rhodes away from the busy coastal resorts.

Whether you’re a complete beginner or an experienced rider, there are trails winding through olive groves, open countryside and rolling hills, with routes suitable for families and more adventurous riders alike.

Many excursions finish at scenic viewpoints overlooking the coastline, offering a completely different perspective of the island.

4. Hike Rhodes’ mountain trails

Rhodes is criss-crossed with walking routes that take visitors through fragrant pine forests, wildflower meadows and traditional villages untouched by mass tourism.

Guided hikes introduce walkers to local wildlife, native plants and spectacular viewpoints, while also revealing the quieter side of one of Greece’s most visited islands.

Spring and autumn are particularly beautiful for walking, although many routes remain enjoyable during summer thanks to shaded woodland.

5. Find hidden beaches and quiet coves

While popular beaches such as Tsambika and Anthony Quinn Bay attract the crowds, Rhodes is also home to countless smaller coves where crystal-clear water meets dramatic cliffs.

Exploring by car or joining a boat trip can uncover peaceful swimming spots perfect for families looking to escape the busiest stretches of sand.

Many are surrounded by unspoilt natural scenery, making them ideal for snorkelling and picnics.

6. Spot wildlife and native plants

Rhodes is one of Greece’s richest islands for biodiversity.

Alongside the famous Jersey tiger moths, visitors may spot colourful birds, reptiles and wildflowers that flourish across the island’s protected landscapes. Pine forests scented with herbs such as oregano and thyme create an entirely different atmosphere from the busy beachfront promenades.

Nature lovers will quickly discover that Rhodes offers far more than sunshine and sea.

7. Slow down and reconnect with nature

Perhaps the greatest attraction isn’t a single location at all, but the slower pace of life found away from the coast.

Whether you’re wandering through woodland, enjoying a picnic beside freshwater springs or watching the sunset from a mountain viewpoint, Rhodes makes it easy to reconnect with nature while creating memorable family experiences.

Most families come to Rhodes for the beaches and the sunshine. That’s entirely reasonable – the beaches are excellent and the sunshine is reliable. The island has more hours of sun per year than almost anywhere else in Europe, the east coast is sheltered and calm, and you’re never far from a stretch of sand worth stopping at.

But Rhodes is also one of the most historically layered destinations in the Mediterranean. It was a major power in the ancient Greek world, a key stop on Roman trade routes, the headquarters of the crusading Knights of St John for over two centuries, and later under Ottoman and Italian rule – each leaving something visible behind. That’s a lot of history in a relatively small place.

The good news for families is that the ancient stuff here tends to actually be impressive rather than just a pile of stones with a placard. Here are seven sites worth putting on the itinerary.

1. Palace of the Grand Master

The Palace of the Grand Master sits at the heart of Rhodes Old Town and announces itself immediately – it’s a proper medieval fortress, built on Byzantine foundations and later taken over by the Knights of St John as their headquarters. Inside you’ll find grand halls, intricate mosaic floors and enough armour and artefacts to keep castle-obsessed children occupied for a good while. Adults tend to be caught off guard by how much of it survives and how well it reads as a building with a story.

Families wanting easy access to the Old Town should look at Amus Hotel & Spa, a five-star property a short drive from the historic centre, with multiple pools, restaurants and sea views.

2. Street of the Knights

Just outside the Palace, the Street of the Knights is one of the best-preserved medieval streets in Europe – and it looks it. The cobbled road is flanked by the old inns of the different knightly orders, each one built in the Gothic style of their home country. It doesn’t take long to walk, which makes it ideal for families with younger children, and it slots neatly into a broader morning or afternoon in Rhodes Town without feeling like a detour.

3. Acropolis of Lindos

The climb up to the Acropolis of Lindos is part of the experience – steep enough to feel like an adventure, but manageable for most children. At the top, you get ancient temple remains, defensive walls dating back thousands of years, and views down over the whitewashed village and the turquoise bay that are hard to beat. The village itself is worth time too: narrow lanes, rooftop restaurants, traditional Lindian houses with their distinctive pebble courtyards.

Lindos Princess Beach Resort & Spa is a natural base for this part of the island – all-inclusive and set on a private beach, with family facilities and easy access to Lindos itself.

Acropolis of Lindos Rhodes

4. Ancient Kamiros

Sometimes called the Pompeii of Rhodes, Kamiros is an ancient Greek city on the northwest coast that was buried under an earthquake and only rediscovered in the 19th century. What makes it work particularly well for families is how legible it is – you can still clearly make out streets, houses, a water cistern system, public buildings. It turns what might otherwise feel abstract into something children can actually picture themselves walking through. The setting, on a hillside above the sea, is beautiful too.

Families looking for a classic all-inclusive Rhodes holiday may want to consider Rodos Princess Beach Resort & Spa. Set on Kiotari Beach, the resort combines family-friendly facilities, multiple restaurants, pools and activities for all ages, making it easy to balance sightseeing with downtime.

5. Kallithea Springs

Slightly different in character from the island’s ancient sites, Kallithea Springs is an Italian-built complex from the 1920s, constructed around thermal springs that had been drawing visitors since antiquity. The architecture – all arches, domes and decorative mosaics – is striking, and the setting on the coast makes it a relaxed place to spend part of a day. It’s the kind of place that looks better the more you wander around it.

Guests staying at Amus Hotel & Spa are well placed to combine a visit here with time in Rhodes Town. The five-star resort is just a short drive from the Old Town and offers multiple pools, restaurants and sea views.

6. Archaeological Museum of Rhodes

The museum is housed in the medieval Hospital of the Knights, which is worth the visit on its own. Inside, the collection takes you from prehistoric Rhodes through the ancient Greek and Roman periods – statues, pottery, mosaics, grave goods. Older children with any interest in history will find things to engage with; younger ones often end up just as captivated by the scale of the building and its courtyard. It’s a good option for a hot afternoon when the beach feels less appealing.

For families who prefer a quieter pace after busy sightseeing days, Princess Sun Hotel & Spa offers panoramic sea views, family-friendly facilities and a relaxed all-inclusive atmosphere overlooking Kiotari Bay.

archaeological-museum-rhodes

7. Throne of Helios

Not every history stop has to mean wandering around ruins, and the Throne of Helios is a useful change of register. It’s an immersive experience using moving seats, visual effects and virtual reality to tell the stories of Rhodes – the Colossus, the gods, the Knights. It’s unapologetically aimed at the entertainment end of the spectrum, which makes it particularly good for teenagers or younger children who’ve run out of patience for ruins, and a decent way to give the island’s myths and history some narrative shape.

Families travelling with older children may also enjoy Princess Andriana Resort & Spa. Alongside its waterpark, sports facilities and extensive dining options, the resort offers plenty of excitement between sightseeing adventures, making it particularly popular with families travelling with teenagers.

Add Athens to the trip

If Rhodes sparks an appetite for more Greek history, it’s worth tacking a few days in Athens on either end of the trip. The Acropolis, the National Archaeological Museum and the Plaka neighbourhood offer a completely different register – urban, layered, epic in scale – and tend to be particularly rewarding for grandparents and older children.

Titania Hotel Athens, part of H Hotels Collection, sits in the centre of the city with most of the key sights walkable, and currently has up to 32% off stays until 31 August 2026.

Rhodes is one of those rare Greek islands that actually works for families of all ages. There’s enough history to keep things interesting, beaches that are easy and accessible, and a strong line-up of all-inclusive resorts that take the stress out of travelling with children. Whether you want to explore or simply stay put by the pool, it delivers both without feeling like a compromise.

Where you stay will shape your trip more than anything else. Rhodes Town and the north lean more towards sightseeing and livelier energy, while the southeast coast – around Lardos and Kiotari – is where you’ll find many of the island’s best all-inclusive resorts. It’s quieter, more spacious and often better value, particularly during the school holidays.

Here, we’ve curated a selection of standout stays from H Hotels Collection, a group of resorts across Rhodes, focused on the island’s southeast coast – an area known for its reliable family resorts, spacious all-inclusive hotels and easy-going holiday feel.

Rhodes family resorts – best for easy, all-inclusive stays

Lindos Princess Beach Resort & Spa is one of the most dependable choices for a classic family holiday. It’s large but with enough space between pools, restaurants and rooms that it never feels overwhelming. There are water slides, dedicated children’s pools and a proper programme of activities, plus direct access to a private beach when you want a change of scene.

Rooms have been recently renovated and the range of family room options means you can find something that works without squeezing everyone into one space. It’s the sort of place where you can happily stay put for a week and not feel like you’re missing out.

For something more relaxed and better value, Princess Sun Hotel & Spa offers a more chilled alternative. Set on a hillside with wide sea views, it’s smaller in scale but still delivers on the essentials: pools with slides, a kids’ club and all-inclusive dining that runs throughout the day. It works well if you want a family-friendly base without the busier feel of a larger resort.

If your priority is keeping everyone entertained from morning to night, Rodos Princess Beach Resort & Spa leans into that. With water slides, sports courts, multiple pools and a long list of activities, it’s designed for busy days and fuss-free evenings. Its beachfront setting overlooking Galouni Bay also gives it an edge if you want quick access to the sea without leaving the hotel.

The addition of a waterpark makes it particularly appealing for families, while the spa and quieter spaces ensure adults still get time to switch off.

It’s a good fit if you’re travelling with older children or teenagers, as there’s enough variety across the resort to keep things interesting without needing to venture far.

Luxury hotels in Rhodes – best for adults-only escapes

If you’re travelling without children or adding a couple of nights on either side of a family trip, Rhodes also has a strong adults-only scene.

Mayia Exclusive Resort & Spa is one of the standout luxury resorts. It’s a premium all-inclusive, but with a calmer, more refined feel – multiple à la carte restaurants, high-end drinks included and a focus on service. Rooms are contemporary and many come with swim-up access or private pools, making it easy to indulge in that ahhh-I’m-away feeling.

For something smaller and more intimate, Boutique 5 Hotel & Spa offers a different pace. With just 44 rooms, all facing the sea, it’s designed for couples who want privacy and quiet rather than constant activity. The spa, understated design and steps-from-the-beach setting make it feel far removed from the busier resorts nearby.

If you’re travelling with children, the southeast coast around Lardos and Kiotari is hard to beat. This is where you’ll find some of the best all-inclusive Rhodes resorts, with the space, facilities and pace that make family holidays feel properly relaxing.

If you’re after something more grown-up, the same stretch of coastline also delivers, with a handful of high-end, adults-only hotels that offer a quieter, more considered experience.

The key is choosing the right fit for your trip. Rhodes has plenty of choice, but once you land on the right hotel, everything else tends to fall into place.

Cambodia holidays tend to conjure up images of Angkor Wat at sunrise or the buzz of Phnom Penh’s night markets and yes, both are worth every bit of the hype. But if you’re travelling as a family and you want something a little different, head south. Slow down and discover the historic riverside town of Kampot and the coastal town of Kep. These lesser-known spots will get under your skin and make you wonder why you hadn’t come sooner.

Here, the gang can relish Cambodia without the crowds; a destination where the days are easy and the food tells an (aromatic) story. For those dreaming of luxury Cambodia holidays or a more relaxed escape that still feels genuine rather than manicured, this corner of the south delivers something increasingly rare.

Kampot, Cambodia: The slow life, done properly

There’s a reason families keep coming back to Kampot, Cambodia: the Bokor National Park hills sitting just beyond the treeline, the tuk tuks trundling past guesthouses with cats asleep on the steps… Life here moves at a different pace and after a day or two, you’ll likely find yourself starting to move with it.

Why not try a cycle through the rice fields, a wander into a nearby village or a slow breakfast watching the Kampot River flow by? Nobody is in a rush, which means children have space to actually notice things: a gecko on a wall, perhaps, a fisherman casting his net, a monk crossing a bridge, workers raking the white crystals of a salt field or the rushing cascade of a waterfall deep in the national park hills…

Things to do in Kampot, Cambodia

When it comes to things to do in Kampot, many of the finest Kampot attractions centre on the river and the surrounding countryside, which suits families perfectly.

Boat trips along the Kampot River are among the most beloved things to do in Kampot and the sunset ones are quite magical. As the light drops, fireflies appear along the mangroves in little clusters of gold, like fairies from Peter Pan’s Neverland.

For early risers, a sunrise trip is equally rewarding – and from there, many families head straight to the salt fields to witness the morning harvest in action, the pans glittering white in the early light. Guided tours and transport can be arranged through any hotel reception.

Kayaking is another easy win (depending on your skill with a paddle!). The waterways are calm and the scenery gives you plenty to talk about. Even a leisurely evening stroll along the riverside earns its place on any Cambodia holidays itinerary.

Kampot is also something of a pilgrimage for tropical fruit lovers, and none more so than durian. If you’re visiting between May and July, you’re in luck – durian season brings the famously pungent fruit to roadside stalls across the region, and the town even has a giant durian statue at its main roundabout to prove it means business. Just check your hotel’s policy before you bring any back to your room.

For families who want a refined base for all of this, Amber Kampot is a high-end riverside stay that balances style and comfort with vistas over the water. For a more secluded stay just outside town, RiverTree Villa & Resort offers spacious villas set among lush gardens by the river, with family-friendly rooms, a pool and easy access to Kampot’s countryside attractions.

Kampot pepper farms: One of the most memorable things to do in Kampot

Ask anyone who has been to this part of the world about Kampot pepper and watch their expression change. It sounds like a niche interest until you are standing on a farm, learning that those familiar black peppercorns on your kitchen shelf share a plant with the red and white varieties (the colour comes from when they are harvested and how they are processed afterwards). Now that’s pub quiz knowledge…

Fun fact: Kampot peppercorns have earned a serious global reputation. In 2010, Kampot pepper became the first Cambodian agricultural product to receive EU Protected Geographical Indication status, placing it alongside Champagne and Parma Ham. Visiting a Kampot pepper farm is one of the most distinctive things to do in Kampot, Cambodia, and La Plantation is the standout choice for families.

Located about 19km from Kampot town, La Plantation farm offers free guided tours in English that walk you through the full journey from planting and harvesting through to drying and sorting. The paths are well-kept and easy to navigate with younger children and the tasting session at the end means you can sample the differences between black, red and white Kampot pepper for yourselves.

Visitors can also find the La Plantation shop in Kampot town centre, where staff can arrange guided tours and transport and visitors can buy the world’s best Kampot pepper.

If you want to stay a night on the farm itself, La Plantation Villa offers boutique rooms from where you can admire the pepper fields and the mountains beyond – a peaceful way to extend the experience.

Trapeang Sangke: Community-based tourism between Kampot and Kep

Sitting about 6km from Kampot town on the road towards Kep, the Trapeang Sangke community-based tourism project is one of the most rewarding stops on any Cambodia family holiday itinerary and one that not enough visitors make time for, if we’re honest.

What was once a fishing community under pressure from mangrove loss and depleting fish stocks has become a model for responsible ecotourism, winning two ASEAN Community Tourism Awards in 2023. Families can take a boat trip through the mangroves, try planting young mangrove saplings in the reforestation areas and hear directly from local fishermen about daily life on the water. Over 200,000 mangrove trees have been planted here by the community and visitors are now part of that effort.

Children will come away with a real understanding of where seafood comes from and why coastal ecosystems matter. Plus, every penny spent here supports community livelihoods, education and conservation directly. A guided tour of Trapeang Sangke and transportation can be arranged at any hotel reception desk.

Kep, Cambodia: Where the sea air changes everything

Just a short 25km drive from Kampot, Kep feels like a different world. If Kampot is about rivers, countryside and farm life, Kep is about mountains meeting the sea and together they tell a complete tale of southern Cambodia.

Kep Beach, Cambodia, is not a party beach. What you get instead is clean air, calm water and the quiet pleasure of having somewhere beautiful largely to yourself.  Children can splash about while parents do very little with great enthusiasm, and after the activity and engagement of Kampot, Kep offers the perfect counterweight.

That said, for families who find stillness after adventure rather than instead of it, Kep has plenty to offer on the water. The Sailing and Discovery Center at Kep West runs beginner and intermediate sailing courses for both adults and children, with certified instructors and a range of boats to suit different ages and abilities.

Island-hopping trips, coastal exploration and even dolphin-spotting expeditions give the days a gentle sense of discovery, while marine conservation experiences add something more meaningful to the mix. On land, guided countryside tours and cycling routes thread through the landscape at whatever pace suits you.

For parents in need of a proper reset, the Kep West Wellness Center adds another dimension to a Cambodia beach holiday. While children are entertained by sailing, beach time or nature experiences, adults can unwind with yoga classes, holistic spa treatments, sound healing and restorative wellness programmes designed to reconnect guests with both nature and themselves. Multi-day retreats and family-friendly experiences make it possible to balance adventure with downtime — something many family holidays promise but rarely deliver.

Kep crab market: The food highlight of any Cambodia beach holiday

Food is central to Kep’s identity and the famous crab market is where that becomes obvious very quickly. Wooden stalls line the waterfront, crabs wait in baskets just pulled from the sea and charcoal smoke drifts through the air, it is lively and colourful, but never overwhelming. Families with younger children find it surprisingly accessible.

The signature dish is crab stir-fried with Kampot pepper and it really is as good as everyone says. The sweetness of the fresh crab against the warmth of the pepper is something you will be thinking about on the flight home. For a more relaxed setting with sea views and an impressive menu, Holy Crab is worth visiting. Their crab amok and grilled squid with Kampot pepper sauce consistently earn rave reviews, and the open-sided dining room over the water at sunset is hard to beat.

Where to stay in Kep, Cambodia

Accommodation in Kep, Cambodia, reflects the same nature-first, unhurried approach as everything else here.

Knai Bang Chatt by Kep West is one of the most distinctive places to stay in Cambodia, three restored villas originally built in the 1960s, set right on the seafront with 18 rooms, an infinity pool overlooking the sea and a fine dining restaurant, The Strand. The resort has a regenerative ethos at its core, with spa treatments, yoga programmes and guided excursions including a Marine Conservation Cambodia tour. For every international booking, the resort plants ten mangrove seedlings in partnership with local community members.

Samanea Beach Resort and Spa offers a different kind of escape, villas set within a private botanical park beside a protected mangrove forest, with an infinity pool overlooking the Gulf of Thailand and sunset views across to Bokor Mountain. The resort has dedicated family villas with twin and king bedrooms, outdoor bathtubs and private terraces. Dinner on the rooftop terrace or arranged privately in the mangrove forest is the sort of experience families remember long after the holiday is over…

When to visit Kampot and Kep

Cambodia holidays work year-round, and both Kampot and Kep have something to offer in every season.

Why Kampot and Kep deserve a place on your Cambodia family holidays itinerary

Kampot, Cambodia, and Kep, Cambodia, offer a chance to let children discover things at their own pace and to come home with more than photographs. Whether it’s fireflies on a Kampot River sunset cruise, tasting world-renowned Kampot pepper at its source, witnessing the morning salt harvest, crab by the sea or an afternoon in a mangrove community that makes the world feel a little more connected, the experiences here are real and unforgettable.

And then there is Kep – where the pace drops, the sea air does its work and families find their way back to each other. Learn to sail together, hop between islands, join a marine conservation excursion or simply let the days unfold without an agenda. Few destinations offer both hearty engagement and rest quite so effortlessly.
