Sans Souci Wien, Vienna Boutique Hotel review – is it good for families?

Nestled directly opposite the MuseumsQuartier in Vienna’s cultural heart, Sans Souci Wien is a sophisticated boutique hotel. From its extraordinary art collection and crystal-chandelier pool to its effortlessly attentive staff, this is Vienna done beautifully.

We were looking for a well-located hotel in the centre of Vienna and the Sans Souci Wien ticked all the boxes we needed for our week in Vienna, supporting our oldest daughter Lauren playing for Team GB in the European Youth Ultimate U17’s Championships. We also had our 11 year old daughter Beatrix with us and of course needed to keep her entertained when there was no matches on.

Whilst the Sans Souci is not a dedicated family hotel and as such, has limited facilities for children, it goes out of its way to be family-friendly and is perfectly located to get you around the city to ALL the great spots to keep the kids entertained.

Vienna is extraordinarily easy to navigate with children and Sans Souci’s location makes it even easier. Trams, buses and the underground are all within seconds of the hotel entrance and within minutes of stepping out we had reached the Wurstelprater Amusement Park, Rathaus Film Festival, Westfield shopping centre and our children’s favourite discovery, Strandbad Gänsehäufel, Vienna’s wonderful lido and outdoor beach resort on the old Danube. For families who prefer not to navigate public transport, the concierge can arrange taxis at any time.

Arrival set the tone for the entire stay. Our luggage was whisked to our room before we had finished checking in and a member of staff took time to walk us around – showing us how to operate the air conditioning, access the spa and order complimentary coffees to our room; this was only available for families and had we been staying as a couple we would have been charged for the service. It was the kind of arrival that makes children and tired parents feel right at home.

Our spacious junior suite offered sweeping views across the city and despite being surrounded by theatres, bars and restaurants, delivered absolute quiet – something any travelling parent will appreciate. An additional bed was arranged for our daughter without fuss and all three of us slept beautifully in crisp white linen on beds that honestly deserve their own review.

The marble bathroom offered a freestanding bathtub and rainfall shower, a nightly dilemma of the very best kind. The suite felt spacious for a family of three and we were happy to return to the suite to just relax and chill out for an hour or so before heading for dinner. The hotel also has its own underground car park, useful if you choose to hire a car for excursions further afield.

The hotel’s 20-metre indoor pool – the longest in Vienna – is a real highlight. Crystal chandeliers reflect off the water, giving it an almost magical quality that made it our favourite wind-down spot after busy days watching our eldest daughter compete for Great Britain in a nearby sports stadium. Children are welcome in the pool with their parents between 10am and 4pm and our 11-year-old declared it the best pool she had ever swum in… high praise indeed.

The spa is a sanctuary. Multiple saunas, a steam room, a state-of-the-art fitness suite and a full menu of luxurious massages and treatments are all available, with plush bathrobes, towels and slippers provided as standard.

The hotel’s extraordinary art collection – lithographs by Roy Lichtenstein, Allen Jones and Steve Kaufman alongside iconic design pieces by Tom Dixon and Arne Jacobsen – fills every corridor and common space, turning a simple walk to breakfast into an enriching cultural experience.

Breakfast is a daily delight. Beautifully presented and among the finest we have eaten anywhere, it combines an extensive gourmet buffet with à la carte cooked-to-order options, local Viennese delicacies, fresh juices, excellent coffee and – because this is Vienna – ice-cold champagne.

The Veranda Bar and Restaurant serves Austrian classics and signature dishes made with organic, regional and seasonal ingredients, with an extensive drinks menu alongside. Vienna’s restaurant scene beyond the hotel is extraordinary, with every conceivable cuisine within easy walking distance.

The verdict

The Sans Souci Vienna is a truly beautiful boutique hotel and is right up there with the most fabulous hotels in the world. Is it truly a family hotel? Well, possibly not, but in its class it is probably one of the most family-welcoming hotels we have stayed at. Nothing was too much trouble and all the staff wanted us ALL to have the best possible stay.
